'He was married once...'

Spoilers maybe:

So we know in OHMSS Bond's wife was killed, and that movie was in 1969 (real world time). LtK was released in 1989, so its 20 real-years since Bond's been a widower.

What's the Bond-world time between the events of OHMSS and Ltk? Had Bond been a widower for a short time or was it still 20 years?

reply

20yrs

reply

Yes, 20 years. And I don't see how that's implausible, since Timothy Dalton is only about 5 years younger than George Lazenby. As a matter of fact, Dalton was already considered for the role of Bond in the late 60's, before Lazenby got the part.

reply

Bond movies are like comics and have a sliding timeline. Even though OHMSS came out in 69 by the time LTK came out to keep the character younger it probably happened I'm the past decade.

reply

Bond movies ... have a sliding timeline.
Correct! Bond is off in his own universe, where time isn't as we know it in our world.🐭

reply

In the books Bond's big adventures came around about once a year, so by that arithmetic TLD took place 8-9 years after the events of OHMSS. But who really knows; the movies are so crazy, Tracy could have died five minutes before the pre-titles.

You don't even need the sliding timeline until you get to Brozzie. I think you can probably make the case that you have an actor in his early 40s playing a character in his early 50s (he seems to be a similar age to Leiter in most of the early films and Leiter is clearly pushing retirement age here). Licence to Kill could just as easily be set in 86/87 (since it is clearly a late 80s setting) which shaves a couple more years off. Connery through Dalton represents a full character arc in many ways.

this film had a genuinely moving reference
to past films and still,, they still give it no credit

It is NOT "20 real-years SINCE Bond's been a widower". Rather, he has BEEN a widower for 20 real-years.

There is a strange floating timeline in the series. Tracy Bond is referenced several times (in The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only, Licence to Kill, and indirectly in The World is Not Enough, when Electra asks if he's ever lost someone).

Bond never seems to get any older, and yet the events of Dr No through to Die Another Day before the reboot, are all supposed to happen to the same man.

reply

Is there a way to order the entire Franchise via references to key life events like this...(ignoring Real Time, and cast changes)

Skyfall keeping Brosnan's M means it's not a True reboot but killing her proves M is a 'Rank'

as you say HMSS,FYEO,SWLM, TWINE, & LtK mean that Bond is One person (or their universe is rife with coincidence)

We 'first' Meet Moneypenny is Skyfall, and like Bond we can assume she's one person...

Q is a bit trickier as Die Another Day shows TWINE's R promoted to Q, while Skyfall introduces Young Q; all after Llewelyn had played Q under every Bond since Goldfinger

Could it be done, either ignoring Dench, or assuming she's 2 M's

reply

The best way to explain Brosnan and Craig having the same M?

Brosnan M is Barbara Mawdsley and Craig M(1) is Olivia Mansfield. Same rank, same actress, different but similar characters.

All Bond films exist on a floating timeline, and if they reference each other - i.e. Tracy, Vesper, Gogol, etc. it's just a hint that they happen after the events they reference.

It's best not to get to caught up in timeline chronology as there is no definitive answer, and there couldn't/shouldn't be. Enjoy each film for what they are individually.
