I never get tired of this flick

I ran across this 20+ years ago, & have owned and given away multiple copies of the VHS & DVD, but always have it around. The cast was flawlessly chosen, and they really do an excellent job with the script. This was my first exposure to Scot Robbie Coltrane, as well as my first time seeing David Johansen as something besides a New York Doll or Buster Poindexter, and between this and 'Scrooged' should David Johansen strictly play cab drivers?
It took me years, but I finally scored a copy of the book this was based on, 'Good Vibes', by Jay Cronley. When I first started my search, copies were listed on various used book sites for a minimum of a C-note.....while I'd ratholed one like Trotter, I wasn't ready to drop anywhere near that for it. I traded emails with the author, and he didn't even have any spare copies, but one morning, I was going to Value Village, and I immediately turned left for the book section, and there was a copy of 'Good Vibes', in its original dust jacket(boring), for $1.99. I read it a couple of times, then turned it over on Amazon for about an $85 profit.
Somebody mentioned this as a Siskel & Ebert "Guilty Pleasure". I reserve that for stuff like 'Zoolander', 'Joe Dirt', 'Marrying Man', and 'Baseketball'. This is simply on my list of my alltime favorite movies.

Funny you should mention that David Johnasen plays cab drivers. See if you can track this movie down where DJ plays another cab driver and he almost steals the movie and has the funniest lines.

If you loved Let it Ride, you will LOVE The Deli.

Well since no on has answered your question, I will give it a shot. The movie he was also a taxi driver was the 1988 movie "Scrooged" with Bill Murray

reply

Yup, I'd have to agree with this one... definitely one of those lesser known movies I really love.

reply

same here.I LOVE this movie, must have watched it over 20 times.

I saw it in the theater, I've probably seen it over a hundred times (literally), it never gets old, all the characters are fleshed out perfectly and some may be a small part, but you still care about them.

I lost count of how many times I've watched it...It just keeps getting better every time...

It's useless to argue about taste and even more useless to litigate it.

reply

totally agree, love this flick!

I have also lost count of my viewings. But even better is when you haven't seen it in years, and it suddenly pops up on cable one day, and you've not thought about it in all that time. It knocks you out again, each time. It's that funny, and somehow manages to remain fresh every time you see it.

I never get tired of this flick either. What a fun ride. The characters are so richly drawn, it's set in one of my favorite places...South Florida and in the 80's a place and time full of these types of people!
David Johanssen was the perfect foyle to Richard Dreyfuss. And Cynthia Nixon, so young and in braces! It's also beautifully shot.

I've watched it dozens of times over the past 20+ years since I first came across it on television, bought the video tape and now it is recorded on my DVR. It's too bad it didn't have a bigger audience, one good thing is this is one of those movies that would be hard to remake today because all the technology takes much of the 'gambling' out of the equation - so forever this colorful cast and the characters they inhabit remain one of those rare gems enjoyed by a lucky few who found it.

Cool.

We just watched it for probably the 17th time and we always love it. Happy movie, good ending and well written, interesting characters. Will always be a favorite.
