No Honor (spoilers)

The last Japanese guy could have killed the protagonist multiple times but spared his life, taught him how to use the sword so they could duel with honor, yet at the end he shoots him like a coward (when he wasn't even going for him but the radio). Even mortally wounded the Japanese soldier once again takes the high road and spares the American's life.

What was this film trying to prove anyway, that Americans are cheaters with no honor?
