Different version before Finding Nemo...

In the original, the two females (Bikini girl and mermaid) had humongous breasts. In the version shown before Finding Nemo, both were completely flat.

Anyone else notice this?

Will the original version be released on DVD? At least as a hidden feature?

That's right! Knick Knack was edited. I think the older version was better. The huge boobs were, in part, the reason why the snow man wanted to get close to them. Without the boobs, it'a a completely different short.

Besides, what did Pixar was thinking? Kids know that women have breasts. Hell, they were fed by breasts. Hahaha

If anyone's interested, the original version is available on kazaa. I just finished dowloading it and it *definately* isn't the version before Finding Nemo, if you get what i mean ;) lol. Anyways, just thought I'd give ya'll a heads up on that.

cheers

Yeah! That's right! You can also downloaded it directly from Pixar in QuickTime. Good quality and the original version.

The version I got from Pixar.com last year was only a short clip of the film. Some of the QuickTime files on their site are complete, but I think the newer films are only excerpts, since you can find them on Disney DVDs now.

I also got a copy off of KaZaA last year. The breasts are not head-sized, but I can definitely see why the snowman was so excited.

My only complaint is the MPEG cuts off before the credits end, so I don't get to hear the rest of that Bobby McFerrin song.

That destroys the impressiveness of it. I was impressed when I saw it before Finding Nemo because it was done in 1989, but knowing that it was actually rendered recently using nice, fast computers (as it must have been in order to re-shape the characters) ruins it.

Actually, there is a hidden feature of sorts on one of the Pixar dvds.
When toy piggy bank Hamm is doing some high-speed channel surfing in Toy Story 2 to find out the location of Al's Toy Barn, to which Woody's been abducted, all of the images flying across the screen appear to be from classic Pixar shorts and commercials. A self-referential gimmick that is similar to the titles of the books on the shelf behind Woody in the original Toy Story.
If you have a Toy Story 2 dvd and watch the channel surfing passage frame by frame, you can see flashes from - among others - Luxo Jr., Tin Toy, Red's Dream, a Listerine commercial and... Knick Knack, featuring original size boobs. You could call that two hidden features!

What are you talking about? Why would they have to recreate the entire short just to alter the chest of one character?

reply

They just changed two of the models to make it more 'disney friendly', and rerendered it at higher resolution. Use your imagination and it's the same short.

I have to agree with "Super Secret Mario" on this one. It's been re-rendered and everything based on the original computer movement data but as you say it was done at a higher resolution with modern computers, and probably modern software. It's still a cool short and all but seeing original (the actual images that were rendered using 1989 technology, which is itself an amazing feat) on the big screen would have been cooler for the sake of history in my opinion.

yeah we were so disgusted when we saw their boobs had disappeared when we saw it before nemo... there must have been some frowned eyebrows when we yelled 'aaaaaahhh noo!!' in the cinema.
i really dont understand, it was a crucial element of the short film; it made people laugh very hard and it made guys understand why the snowman wanted to be with her ;)

reply

It was funny because she not only was a blonde cutie, but of course, her accoutrements were well-proportioned.

Plus, John Lasseter said they wanted to get a Chuck jones cartoon feel to it-
This explains how the snowman keeps trying but ultimately fails in his attempts (like Wile E Coyote). Plus, the little wink-wink to the audience when he gets a load of the girls (both bikinied and mermaid).

I'd seen "Knick Knack" in the 90's on a programme about animation and loved it-a few years later,on the wave of "Toy Story" merchandise, was a Pixar/Disney video shorts compilation called "Tiny Toy Stories" which had the Original version (Silicon enhanced)(!)as well as Luxo Jr.-having recently upgraded my puter,I decided to try out I-tunes,and saw knick knack available to buy as a download...it's the "new" version, and it won't run properly on my newer, faster machine!grrr...

The original version (before the digital masectomy given to the two gals on the FINDING NEMO dvd) was released on its own on VHS years ago, in addition to appearing on the TINY TOY STORIES compilation. Hopefully the new Pixar compilation out today has the film as originally created.

I've since acquired (online) the ipod version, which happily is the original version, and runs just great ;)

Nope, Pixar Short Films Collection Volume1 has got the redone version. Too bad. At least the orignial version is still out there on the net. On a related note, I wonder why IMDB doesn't have it listed?
