Anorexia

My sister loves the Carpenters. I personally like just a few of their songs.

I saw part of the Karen Carpenter Story yesterday. She became anorexic just because one review called her chubby?

I watched the film today, it was on channel 5.

I don't think she became anorexic just because one review called her chubby, she became anorexic because she got very self conscious about her looks and what the audience thought of her. When people said how great she looked skinny, she tried to keep that image, thinking skinny is better. - Atleast thats what I think, I didn't pay much attention to the movie, I was busy with something.

And she had a very controlling mother, and brother for that matter....anorexia is about control, and it seemed like they controlled her in all aspects of her life. She also had the whole "best little girl in the world" thing going on...and anorexia is often "the good girls disease"

Well, Karen didn't become anorexic because of that review. She did lose weight and mainted her weight until 1973. She began a new diet and exercise program that made her bulk up. She went off of it, later on. When the signs really did show her being anorexic was around 1976 because records sells were low and they weren't a hit anymore. Also, Karen wanted to be more independent and really couldn't because her family was so tight knit. So, she choose to take control with food. When she was in New York (when Richard was in the hospital), she did go to see a psychologist, but was losing a lot more weight. Her marriage to Tom Burris didn't help her. She eventually lost more and more weight until she was in the hospital for the last time. Also, if you noticed Karen's skin during the 80s it changed. Around 1981, she had got a really dark skin tan because people thought she looked sickly, but that didn't help. She just looked like a sun burnt anorexic.

That "chubby" magazine review scene is one of the many fictitious scene which Richard Carpenter took issue with. Her descent into anorexia nervosa actually began in 1974 with the diet that made her bulk up, as a previous post-er stated. She freaked, but then it became a control issue.

Karen did not seek treatment while Richard was in rehab. She recorded her solo album during that time. She did eventually go back to seek treatment, though, but really, by that point, it was too late.

For years, she'd been abusing her body with the starving, occasional purging, then the laxatives and thyroid pills. Her poor heart finally gave out, even though she was still recovering at the time of her death.

Sad...
