When exactly do the events of Karate Kid III take place?

If I remember correctly, Part II literally picks up where the first one left off at the All-Valley Tournament. And Part III picks up with Daniel and Mr. Miyagi returning to the United States from Okinawa following the events of the second movie. According to Wikipedia, Part III begins in September 1985. So KKIII is what TV Tropes likes to call, a "Present Day Past" story.

You kinda answered your own question. Part 2 picks up exactly where the first left off and part 3 picks up right after that. Daniel was a senior in the first movie and the two sequels take place in the summer. In part 3, he’s getting ready to go off to college. Basically, this means the entire trilogy takes place in the span of about a year. As wikipedia said, it’s in 1985.

In season 2 of Cobra Kai, Daniel references the events of this movie, telling his students, "The year was 1985."

In part 3, the Cobra Kai kids are driving a 1988 Mustang GT. Same thing happened in Rocky 2, which takes place right after the original in 1976 but Rocky is driving a 79 Trans Am
