is there a widescreen version available with english subtitles
shareNo widescreen version with English subtitles is available in Region 1 or Region 2. Is the Region 4 version widescreen? I'm not absolutely sure, but I think the Region 1 Fox Lorber version is open matte, rather than pan and scan. That's close enough to widescreen for me.

Just saw the Koch Lorber DVD. Very Good film, but the quality of the print used to make the DVD was evidently not the best - or was the cinematography that murky in the original theatrical print? Too bad, because there were some fine compositions, and it's a shame their impact was blunted. The script is what matters most, in the case of this film, so I would urge anyone to see it no matter what the print quality. Neertheless, this movie is not as well presented as it should be.
shareI just watched this movie in a class about religious retellings and such. Anyway, our dumb technology-challenged professor could not figure out how to make the English subtitles go away once he figured out how to make the English voice-over come on, and I noticed that the subtitles in no way matched what was actually being said in the voice-over... I certainly don't know French, but I'm assuming the problem happened in translation... but surely they'd get the same people to write the subtitles as the ones that did the voice-overs...??? It was a good movie, but it was really funny reading as they talked and having none of it match!

about English dubbing not matching at all with the English subtitles:
I had that same experience, and I'm not technology challenged! I think the reason of the mis-match is that the point of dubbing is to make it seem like the actors are actually saying those words. So they have to choose words that look like what the actors are speaking. Of course the English words that look like what they are saying in French, is not going to match the actual English translation. It drove me crazy, because the dialogue was so different, and not as good.
What part wasn't that good?, the subtitles or the dubbing?
