I love this film (spoilers)

I first saw it on release in 1989. I didn't understand it but I loved Lothaire Bluteau and the character of Daniel. I found his death harrowing even though the organ donation at the end was meant to show he had not died in vain.

It was one of the first DVDs I bought when I got my DVD player and its meaning is no more transparent to me now than then! If anyone who visits here has ideas I'd be interested to hear them.

I understand that we see the hypocrisy of the church where priests have affairs (breaking vows of celibacy) but no revision of the Passion play is possible. How Daniel wrecks the auditions for the advert in much the same way as jesus tore down the money market. That Daniel playing Christ is killed by the unfortunate actions of a supporter. From my memory the people turned against Jesus when he appeared before the Pharisees and the Judas. Also, how identified Daniel becomes with Jesus, most obvious when he is dying and reaching out to people in the subway.

There's probably a lot more.
