I loved the cast, but seeing it for the second time, now, that I have access to a lot more of American movies, I was disappointed.
Knox's 20 laws were suspended here, not mere disbelief. No writer, even at their first stab at crime fiction can establish a character, who is a supposed genius, and then not explain how he lucks out on finding the guy. No credible cop would look at a serial murder case starting with the last one and circling back to the first, as it was known even back in '89, that serial killers, just like most killers make the most mistakes at their first killing. No explanation was spent on how he came up with the idea of the music notes, they could have been just as well coordinates alongside a tangent. At no point does he even formulate a theory, that instead of breaking in, it's more likely, as it was with Ted Bundy, that he charms these victims, possibly even knows them.
I couldn't stop shaking my head (or it was a dubbing mistake) when the mayor said to the police chief that they both could be fired. Elected officials can be investigated, sure, but not fired, unlike the appointed commissioner, who also goes through a hearing before being fired. My personal favorite was, I know I'm protected, but I have nightmares, to which Starkey said, go to my place I live alone. She agreed! I thought, sure sign me up, this detective can't be 100% certain I'm not a target, take me to a place I don't know, where nobody can protect me. For that matter, how could she, a civilian tag along everywhere? Not that her judgment was the best to begin with. In 5 minutes proximity, there are at least 7 hotels, and I want to book a room, to which she agreed, despite the fact she only met him, he didn't show ID, could have been the killer for all she knew. You're handsome, let's bang. What I'm saying is, key steps, actions warmblooded creatures make have been missing from the script. Ordering a strike team, when you suspect the when, but not the where? Nobody asked if his prime number, constellation or other ideas were worth their salt.
I live in the Gordius Apartment Complex, my interior designer was M.C. Esher.
