Alan Rickman's worst role...not this...

I liked this movie, thought it was a good dark comedy, probably one of the firsts (now there's tons of them) and the actors did a great job. Alan Rickman is great in just about all of his movies, but I have to say, I just watched Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves last night and that has GOT to be his worst F^&%^&$^ movie! I used to think Costner was the worst one in it, now that trophy goes to Rickman I'm sad to say!

I always Rickman in this because it was one of his few (if only) "Good Guy" roles. He was a little flaky, but a good guy. He also reminded me of Bob Dylan in this movie.

Hey just wondering, as a Rickman fan I'm trying to collect his movies (with noticable roles) Does he have a noticible role? How much wuld you estimate he is in this if not. Thank you.

Yes, he has a noteworthy role. You should see it for yourself. It's a quirky, off-beat 'drama-dy' that is a good vehicle for Kline, Rickman and both lead females. Rickman's character is well-played as a kind of bohemian artist who 'resents that fact that he needs money.' His attitude is not quite as sardonic as his character in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. You really should watch it.

If you're still looking for his best movies, Rickman costarred with Mos Def in the historical drama "Something the Lord Made" in 2004 or 2005. It was an HBO production and, I think, one of the best movies anybody's made in the last 20 years. Rickman plays not a bad guy but a seriously flawed good guy, a brilliant and accomplished man who could not or would not use his great power as a renowned surgeon to end racism in his own hospital. Highly recommended for a hundred reasons, but the two stars' performances are the two best.

Sorry, I'd have to disagree. The Sheriff made Empire's list of Best Villians Ever! He upstaged Costner imo.

reply

I agree with the last poster. He not only upstaged Costner, he took the picture away from him! They had to edit some of the scenes out of Robin Hood, because at test screenings the Sheriff was the favorite character of the audience, not Robin Hood!
As far as the January Man is concerned this was a good role. He was Ed, sardonic, but also very helpful, and smart. I kind of wish there had been a sequel to this where Nick and Ed have to do some more police work together.
The last third of this picture was far fetched, but very entertaining!

My fav role of Alan Rickmans is "Hans Gruber" from Die Hard. Brilliantly acted villain. Also loved his Sheriff Of Nottingham.. "Locksley... im going to cut your heart out with a spoon"...."Cousin, why a spoon?"..."Because its dull you idiot it will hurt more".

reply

The Sheriff's lines were easily the best: "Cancel the kitchen scraps for lepers and orphans" , "I'll cut your heart out with a spoon" and so on. Classics.

I think just about everyone upstaged Costner, including his merry men, and the Saracen.

I thought Alan Rickman was quite good in this.

^^ agreed, Michael Collins gets my vote

Seriously?!? Rickman is the only reason to even bother watching RH:POT. Kevin Costner sucks every single second he's on screen. He and MEM have no chemistry. Christian Slater's character is obnoxious. Morgan Freeman is great as always but the role isn't enough to hold up the movie.

But this board is about January Man, and I adore Rickman in it. I've never seen him give a bad performance. But if you want to see an example of a truly bad movie that he was in, watch Dark Harbor, Close My Eyes or An Awfully Big Adventure. But be warned, Alan is fabulous in all of them.

An Awfully Big Adventure was great film 👍 Very slow and sad 😢

Have to disagree. Rickman's Sheriff made that film.

(Before anyone asks. Yes I know the post is twelve years old)
