Having almost the same plot would make it a remake, not a sequel. It has similarities in plot, yes. Just nowhere near as good overall.

I'd say that it's like a poor man's version of Deer Hunter that happens to star the same lead actor.

Roger Ebert once compared it to the theme in Deer Hunter of going back for your friends.
But he points out that the journey isn't as far as in Deerhunter, just across town.
