Indy wearing a tie with his field attire when he went to rescue his dad = brilliant subtle detail.

When I was younger, I always thought it was a bit odd that Indy wore a tie with his field attire when he went to rescue his dad in the Austrian castle: it always seemed a bit out of place for a gray-collar character like Indy. Upon a recent re-watch of the movie, it suddenly dawned on me that he wore the tie because deep down he desperately wanted his father's approval/acceptance more than anything, yet it is something he would not speak about openly. It really adds a layer of poignancy to Indy as a character and it makes the plot and themes of this film that much more meaningful all around.

Thoughts?

Didn't he wear the tie when trying to impersonate a Scottish lord in order to gain access to the castle where his father was being held?

reply

Yes.

But rescuing him was just a way of impressing him ... Apparently 🤷‍♂️

reply

Yes, but he was wearing it in the car during the drive to the castle, before he thought of the Scottish lord ruse

reply

Hmm, you're right.

That's definitely a cute detail.

funny I was thinking this last night as well that he had his tie on for a lot of this movie. and only took it off when he met up with Marcus and co at the end. he actually spends 3 quarters of the movie wearing the tie. Then suddenly decides to take it off for the final 30 mins and back to the classic 3 buttons open again.

I don't know what the real reason was for it but he had the tie on for the tomb and I assume he got into his gear and just left it on.. dunno why he didn't just take it off then though and why he decided to for the final part of the film.

I hadn't thought of that but I think you are right about why he's wearing the tie.
