English (or subtitled) version anywhere online?

I'd love to see this but can't find it anywhere! Anyone know where to find it?

reply

I've found it using emule, but no subtitles... If anyone has a clue about english (or french) subtitle, I'll be grateful

reply

Alright, to get english subtitles for this film,

1. Copy everything beneath the three equals signs into notepad, and save it.
2. Rename the saved file with the name of your copy of Illa das Flores, changing the format tag to .srt from .avi or whatever.
3. Put this subtitle file into a folder with the copy of the movie.
4. Open the movie in Media Player Classic.
5. In MPC, File -> Load Subtitles -> (the subtitle file)

That should do it.

1
00:00:04,761 --> 00:00:08,861
This is not a work of fiction.

2
00:00:10,127 --> 00:00:13,127
The Isle of Flowers actually exists.

3
00:00:12,849 --> 00:00:16,849
God does not exist.

4
00:00:35,368 --> 00:00:42,368
Isle of Flowers

5
00:00:46,362 --> 00:00:49,362
We are in Bel m Novo, in the city of Porto Alegre,

6
00:00:49,362 --> 00:00:51,362
state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the extreme south of Brazil.

7
00:00:51,717 --> 00:00:55,817
More precisely: we are at latitude 30 degrees, 12 minutes, 30 seconds South, and longitude

8
00:00:55,960 --> 00:00:59,160
51 degrees, 11 minutes, 23 seconds West.

9
00:01:00,379 --> 00:01:02,379
Right now, we are walking through a tomato field,

10
00:01:02,537 --> 00:01:04,537
and standing there in front of us, we can see

11
00:01:04,732 --> 00:01:06,732
a human being. In this case, a Japanese.

12
00:01:06,806 --> 00:01:10,706
The Japanese are distinguishable from other human beings...

13
00:01:10,026 --> 00:01:13,026
by the shape of their eyes, their black hair, and their characteristic names.

14
00:01:14,932 --> 00:01:16,932
The Japanese in question is called Suzuki.

15
00:01:17,444 --> 00:01:20,544
Human beings are mammals that are distinguishable

16
00:01:20,545 --> 00:01:23,745
from other animals, like the whale, or from bipeds like the chicken,

17
00:01:23,861 --> 00:01:26,961
principally by two characteristics:

18
00:01:26,248 --> 00:01:29,248
their highly-developed brain and opposing thumbs.

19
00:01:29,764 --> 00:01:32,764
The highly-developed brain gives human beings the capacity

20
00:01:33,860 --> 00:01:36,860
to save information, relate it, process it, and understand it.

21
00:01:37,859 --> 00:01:41,059
The opposing thumb enables human beings to make a pinching movement,

22
00:01:41,778 --> 00:01:43,978
which allows them to precisely manipulate things.

23
00:01:44,653 --> 00:01:47,653
The highly-developed brain, combined with the ability

24
00:01:47,365 --> 00:01:50,365
to pinch with their fingers, allows human beings

25
00:01:50,365 --> 00:01:55,365
to make countless improvements on their planet.

26
00:01:57,365 --> 00:01:59,365
Among these was the cultivation of tomatoes.

27
00:01:59,508 --> 00:02:01,708
The tomato, unlike the whale,

28
00:02:01,207 --> 00:02:04,207
the chicken and the Japanese, is a vegetable.

29
00:02:04,634 --> 00:02:08,634
A member of the botanical family Solanaceae, the tomato has been cultivated

30
00:02:08,634 --> 00:02:12,634
for its nutritional properties since the year 1800.

31
00:02:12,147 --> 00:02:16,147
The planet Earth produces around sixty-one million tons of tomatoes each year.

32
00:02:16,239 --> 00:02:19,039
Mr Suzuki, despite working about twelve hours each day,

33
00:02:19,039 --> 00:02:22,039
is responsible for a very small share of that production.

34
00:02:22,127 --> 00:02:26,527
The main use of the tomato is to feed human beings.

35
00:02:27,042 --> 00:02:30,042
Mr Suzuki is Japanese, and therefore a human being. Even so,

36
00:02:30,641 --> 00:02:34,641
Mr. Suzuki doesn t plant the tomatoes with the purpose of eating them.

37
00:02:34,541 --> 00:02:37,641
Almost all the tomatoes produced by Mr Suzuki are delivered to a

38
00:02:37,641 --> 00:02:39,841
supermarket in exchange for money.

39
00:02:40,487 --> 00:02:44,487
Money was probably invented on the initiative of Giges, King of Lydia, a

40
00:02:44,487 --> 00:02:47,487
great kingdom of Asia Minor, who lived seven centuries before Christ.

41
00:02:48,627 --> 00:02:49,627
Christ was a Jew.

42
00:02:50,653 --> 00:02:54,653
The Jews have highly-developed brains and opposing thumbs.

43
00:02:55,159 --> 00:02:57,159
They are therefore human beings.

44
00:03:00,480 --> 00:03:03,480
Until the introduction of money, economics was based on direct exchange.

45
00:03:03,973 --> 00:03:06,973
The difficulty of deciding the amount of tomatoes that would be equivalent

46
00:03:06,674 --> 00:03:09,674
to a chicken, and the problems of directly exchanging chickens for whales

47
00:03:09,674 --> 00:03:13,674
were the main reasons for the invention of money.

48
00:03:14,602 --> 00:03:19,602
Since the third century before Christ, any action or object created by

49
00:03:19,769 --> 00:03:22,869
human beings (because of the combined effort of their

50
00:03:22,458 --> 00:03:26,658
highly-developed brains and opposable thumbs) - in fact everything on earth,

51
00:03:26,201 --> 00:03:30,401
living or not, tomatoes, chickens or whales - can be exchanged for money.

52
00:03:30,597 --> 00:03:35,597
To make it easier to exchange tomatoes for money, human beings created supermarkets.

53
00:03:36,395 --> 00:03:40,595
Mrs Anete is a biped, a mammal, and a Roman Catholic.

54
00:03:40,997 --> 00:03:43,597
She has a highly-developed brain and opposing thumbs.

55
00:03:44,215 --> 00:03:45,715
She is therefore a human being.

56
00:03:47,508 --> 00:03:51,608
She came to this supermarket, among other things, to exchange her money for tomatoes.

57
00:03:52,284 --> 00:03:56,284
Mrs Anete earned her money in exchange for the work she does.

58
00:03:57,811 --> 00:04:02,811
She uses her highly-developed brain and her opposing thumbs to exchange perfumes for money.

59
00:04:05,175 --> 00:04:08,175
Perfumes are liquids that are usually extracted from flowers, and that give

60
00:04:08,175 --> 00:04:10,175
human beings a more pleasant odor than their natural one.

61
00:04:11,276 --> 00:04:14,276
Mrs. Anete does not extract the perfumes from flowers.

62
00:04:14,276 --> 00:04:18,276
At a factory, she exchanges a certain amount of money for perfumes.

63
00:04:20,067 --> 00:04:23,067
Then, Mrs Anete walks from door to door exchanging those perfumes

64
00:04:23,067 --> 00:04:26,067
for a slightly larger amount of money.

65
00:04:26,257 --> 00:04:30,257
The difference between these sums of money is known as profit.

66
00:04:30,419 --> 00:04:36,419
Profit was once forbidden to Catholics, but today is free for all human beings.

67
00:04:37,034 --> 00:04:40,034
Mrs Anete s profit is smaller then the factory s profit,

68
00:04:40,034 --> 00:04:46,034
but is enough to be exchanged for one kilogram of tomatoes and two kilograms of meat - in this case, pig meat.

69
00:04:46,008 --> 00:04:50,008
Like human beings and whales, the pig is a mammal, but it is a quadruped.

70
00:04:50,896 --> 00:04:54,896
It is eaten as food by the Japanese, by Catholics and by all other human beings, except Jews.

71
00:04:54,964 --> 00:05:03,964
The items that Mrs Anete exchanged for the money she exchanged for the perfumes extracted from flowers will be completely consumed by her family in one day.

72
00:05:04,388 --> 00:05:09,688
One day is the time interval that the planet Earth takes to make a complete rotation upon its own axis.

73
00:05:10,363 --> 00:05:12,663
In the middle of the day, it is twelve o'clock.

74
00:05:13,294 --> 00:05:17,294
The family is a community formed by one man and one woman,

75
00:05:17,294 --> 00:05:20,994
united by a matrimonial bond, and by the children born from that marriage.

76
00:05:21,841 --> 00:05:26,841
Some of the tomatoes that Mr Suzuki exchanged for money with the supermarket, and that were again exchanged for Mrs. Anete s money

77
00:05:26,841 --> 00:05:34,041
obtained as profit from the exchange of the perfumes extracted from the flowers are transformed into sauce for the pork.

78
00:05:35,515 --> 00:05:38,315
One of those tomatoes, which Mrs Anete thought

79
00:05:38,415 --> 00:05:40,815
not good enough to be used in the sauce, was thrown in the garbage.

80
00:05:41,855 --> 00:05:44,855
Garbage is everything that is produced by human beings,

81
00:05:44,855 --> 00:05:48,855
in a combined effort of their highly-developed brain and opposing thumbs,

82
00:05:47,955 --> 00:05:54,055
and that, according to the judgment of a certain human being, was not good enough to be used in a sauce.

83
00:05:55,320 --> 00:05:58,320
A city like Porto Alegre, inhabited by more than one million human beings,

84
00:05:58,320 --> 00:06:01,320
produces around 500 hundred tons of garbage daily.

85
00:06:02,132 --> 00:06:07,132
The garbage attracts all kinds of germs and bacteria, which in turn cause diseases.

86
00:06:07,132 --> 00:06:10,332
Diseases seriously impair the proper functioning of human beings.

87
00:06:11,191 --> 00:06:16,191
Even when it doesn t cause disease, the look and smell of garbage are extremely unpleasant.

88
00:06:16,898 --> 00:06:20,298
That s why the garbage is taken to certain places, far away, where

89
00:06:20,398 --> 00:06:24,398
it can freely pollute, smell bad, and attract diseases.

90
00:06:24,699 --> 00:06:27,999
At Porto Alegre, one of the places that is chosen for the garbage that smells

91
00:06:27,999 --> 00:06:31,499
bad and attracts diseases is called the Isle of Flowers.

92
00:06:34,067 --> 00:06:39,067
An island is a portion of land surrounded by water. Water is a clean-smelling substance,

93
00:06:39,067 --> 00:06:45,067
lacking taste, colourless, and composed by two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen.

94
00:06:47,615 --> 00:06:52,615
Flowers are the plant's reproductive organs, usually odoriferous and brightly coloured.

95
00:06:52,700 --> 00:06:58,700
From odoriferous flowers are extracted the perfumes, such as those which Mrs. Anete exchanged for the money she later exchanged for tomatoes.

96
00:06:59,385 --> 00:07:02,185
There are few flowers on the Isle of Flowers .

97
00:07:02,230 --> 00:07:08,630
There is, however, lots of garbage, and among it, the tomato that Mrs. Anete thought was not good enough to make the pork sauce.

98
00:07:11,291 --> 00:07:13,291
There are also many pigs on the island.

99
00:07:15,008 --> 00:07:20,008
The tomato that Mrs. Anete judged unfit for the pork that she was going to serve to her family she will serve as food for the pig,

100
00:07:20,308 --> 00:07:24,208
and it will be excellent nutrition for the pig and its family - from the pig s point of view.

101
00:07:27,159 --> 00:07:30,059
It must be pointed out that Mrs Anete has a highly-developed brain, while

102
00:07:30,059 --> 00:07:34,059
the pig does not have any thumbs, let alone opposing ones.

103
00:07:35,157 --> 00:07:39,157
The pig does, however, have an owner. The pig's owner is a human being, with a

104
00:07:39,157 --> 00:07:43,157
highly-developed brain, opposing thumbs, and money.

105
00:07:44,247 --> 00:07:48,247
The pig's owner traded a small part of his money for a lot on the Isle of Flowers,

106
00:07:48,247 --> 00:07:51,447
thus becoming owner of that plot of land.

107
00:07:51,557 --> 00:07:55,157
A lot is a plot of land that has an owner and a fence around it.

108
00:07:55,205 --> 00:07:58,205
This lot, where the garbage is stored, was fenced off to keep the pigs from getting out,

109
00:07:58,205 --> 00:08:02,405
and human beings from getting in.

110
00:08:05,840 --> 00:08:09,840
Here, the employees of the owner of the pig separate from the garbage various materials of

111
00:08:09,840 --> 00:08:12,840
organic origin that they consider appropriate as nutrition for the pigs.

112
00:08:13,386 --> 00:08:17,986
"Of organic origin" refers to everything that was once alive, whether in animal or vegetable form.

113
00:08:17,986 --> 00:08:21,986
Tomatoes, chickens, pigs, flowers, and paper are of organic origin.

114
00:08:21,912 --> 00:08:25,812
This paper, for example, has been used to prepare a history test in the

115
00:08:25,812 --> 00:08:30,812
Nossa Senhora das Dores High School, and has been given to student Ana Luiza Nunes, a human being.

116
00:08:31,774 --> 00:08:37,474
A history test is a test of the capacity of a human being's brain to remember history.

117
00:08:37,474 --> 00:08:43,374
For example: Who was Genghis Khan? Name the historical provinces.

118
00:08:43,137 --> 00:08:45,337
To remember is to live.

119
00:08:45,487 --> 00:08:50,987
Some materials of organic origin, like tomatoes and history tests, are given to the pigs as nutrients.

120
00:08:51,294 --> 00:08:56,894
What was considered unfit as nutrition for the pigs will be used to feed women and children.

121
00:08:58,193 --> 00:09:04,793
Women and children are human beings, with highly-developed brains and opposing thumbs, but no money.

122
00:09:09,838 --> 00:09:14,038
They have no owners and, what is worse, there are many of them.

123
00:09:15,560 --> 00:09:18,560
As there are many of them, the men who work for the owner of the pigs have organized them in groups of ten,

124
00:09:18,560 --> 00:09:23,760
and give them permission to pass through the fence and get inside.

125
00:09:23,679 --> 00:09:30,679
Once inside the fence, they can catch for themselves all the food the employees of the owner of the pigs have judged unsuitable for the pigs.

126
00:09:33,226 --> 00:09:36,226
The men who work for the owner of the pigs have arranged things so that each group of ten human beings has

127
00:09:36,226 --> 00:09:43,226
five minutes to stay inside the fence gathering material of organic origin, like tomatoes and history tests.

128
00:09:45,622 --> 00:09:48,622
Five minutes equals three hundred seconds.

129
00:09:52,970 --> 00:09:59,970
Since nineteen hundred and fifty-eight, the second was defined as the equivalent of nine billion,

130
00:09:59,970 --> 00:10:05,170
one hundred and ninety two million, six hundred and thirty one thousand, seven hundred and fifty eight radiation cycles of the caesium atom.

131
00:10:05,718 --> 00:10:09,718
Caesium is a non organic material that was found in garbage in the town of Goi nia.

132
00:10:15,029 --> 00:10:20,029
The tomato planted by Mr Suzuki, exchanged for money at the supermarket,

133
00:10:20,029 --> 00:10:29,029
exchanged for money that Mrs Anete exchanged for perfumes extracted from flowers, rejected for the pork sauce, and dumped in the garbage,

134
00:10:29,029 --> 00:10:33,229
is now available to the human beings on the Isle of Flowers.

135
00:10:40,780 --> 00:10:45,780
The thing that puts the human beings lower than the pigs on the Isle of Flowers

136
00:10:45,780 --> 00:10:48,780
in the priority queue to search for food, is the fact that they have neither money nor an owner.

137
00:10:51,596 --> 00:10:59,596
The human being is distinguished from other animals by his highly-developed brain, his opposing thumbs, and by that fact that he is free.

138
00:11:03,050 --> 00:11:07,050
Freedom is the state of those that enjoy liberty.

139
00:11:14,426 --> 00:11:23,426
"Freedom" is a word that fires the dreams of human beings. No-one can explain what it means, and no-one understands it.

140
00:11:26,499 --> 00:11:31,499
subtitles by Stella, Demon, Heph, Fnoop and auweia

reply

Hello, I'm part of the team that made this subtitle. This is the same one, except there has been one correction in the last line.

It should read like this >

139
00:11:14,426 --> 00:11:23,426
"Freedom" is a word that feeds the dreams of human beings. No-one can explain what it means, but everybody understands it.

Just replace line 139, and it should be about perfect now :)

Thank you guys! Great job!

reply

Wow, thanks, I just Babelfished and slightly corrected my own version (couldn't figure out what "conjugação" meant though, heh), and was about to post it here and ask if anyone had anything better, and then someone's already done it less than two weeks earlier. THANKS!!! =D This made my day. Now let me put this in my file-sharing folder... *spreading the knowledge*

I wish I could find the Norwegian dubbed version though, that was the first version I saw and it totally blew me away.

reply

Thanks a lot for the english translation, after a year or so i can finally watch the movie!

Cheers :)

haven't read the whole thread (sorry) - but just seen that you want an English version of Isle of Flowers....

it's being shown here with the choice of subtitles in 6 different languages:

http://www.hurluberlu.com/en/movieViewer.php?filmName=ilha_das_flores

(that's the link to the english subtitled version)

reply

A further translation of the last line: "Freedom is a word the human dream feeds on, that no one can explain or fail to understand."

reply

Actually you dont need to use wmp classic if you use vlc player and just put the subtititle folder the smae place as is ecplained above you just need t0 go to video
subtitile track
and will be labelled as track 1
select it and will work perfect

reply

The DVD that includes this movie with subtitles in four languages is for sale here: http://www.casacinepoa.com.br/ing/filmes/caixadvd.htm

reply

Actually, don't even need that anymore, but don't know how long. Finally we have the short uploaded on Google video with the same English subs we did posted i this thread >>

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8708446201833554343&hl=en

slight change in the very last lines tho, but it's pretty close. Also, the www.hbfilms.com link we think is from a WMV file in the original Portuguese language, but that file is a little lower quality and file size. This is from the French dub dvd (no idea where it came from originally), but it's better quality.

The subtitles were done independently, and you can see some differences, like the word 'brain' as opposed to a literal translation for the frontal lobe

At least you can see it finally matched to what we've been trying to apply these subs to for the past year. I did most of the timing on it. It could still be a little better I think, but it's down to half a second, error in the worst spots
