Question.

How did Parnell manage to get around the whole registering of Dennis Parnell into elementary school? Esp when they kept asking for his records? Anyone have an idea of how he did that? Just curious. I know for the second school he went in as Dennis the paper trail had started from the first school he went as Dennis but what about the non-existent records from Merced?

reply

I read the book but can't remember how he got around that. I know in the movie at least, he gave them some b.s. story about how they were lost, and it may take a while to retrieve them.

I do know that whenever things appeared to be getting too hot, is when Parnell would yank Steven/Dennis out of school and move on to the next town.

I don't believe that school administrators are so lazy anymore about random adults walking into an elementary school and registering some kid that they have with them.

I just wanted to slap the hell out of the lady principal at Steven's first school, for dismissing his pleas for help and taking it so lightly.

Birth certificates, legal identification, vaccination records, etc are always required now for registering a minor in school, and if you are not the birth parent, you are required to show court papers that you are the legal guardian.

Everything was done by paper and snail mail in the 70ies. Even genuine records could take a while to arrive so in the meantime he had built himself a file from that school. Then when he registered him at the new school he easily passed along the records from the previous school. It was very calculated and easy because of the lack of computers in those days.

Yeah that's what I meant by the paper trail because we even see in the movie how quickly parnell switched Steven to the second school and readily had the records from the first school. It'd be much much more difficult to do that today.
