the music's AWESOME!! the openning theme gives me chills every time. plus, this IS the unsung gem of the whole series, plain and simple!!

small budget picture. I always felt that, compared to the other Howling sequels, it delivered based on suspense, atmosphere and the seldom seen werewolf (sometimes less is more). The isolated castle, howling blizzard outside, and dark shadows indoors, gave this movie a feeling of dread and hopelessness. The ending was cheesy, but as a whole, I felt the movie wasn't bad. The funny thing is, for years I've heard horror fans slam this movie as the worst of the Howling series, which I've always disagreed with. Glad to see that there are others that enjoyed it.

One of the moments in the movie that I enjoyed, was when someone tried to leave the castle (which I initially thought was a good idea), and the camera focuses on a bank of snow and you just know something bad is about to happen. Classic moment.

I think the only reason fans seem to think this is the worst of the series is due to footage werewolf screentime and maybe not enough gore. But I think the fans should hate howling 2. That was the weirdest howling/horror movie that I have ever seen. Part 5 deserves more props.

i have only seen part one and five.
I cant say which one is the better one but i think i enjoyed part five much more.

This movie got excellent setting and one eerie, moody and a cozy kind of atmosphere.

It was a little short on gore but i really loved the fact that they never showed to much of the werewolf.

one true werewolf gem that really ranks among the best out there according to me.

Yeah, like they say, "Don't show the elephant." If the werewolf is onscreen too much, that kills the dread; you can start picking apart the flaws in the effects and costumes. The first movie probably shouldn't have shown the end result of the transformation because in full light, it just looked too fake, whereas the yellow eyes looked terrific.

This movie stands out amongst the series. I think it gets overlooked because it's a sequel and the previous four were rather weak. The first wasn't bad, but it was very slow in places and by the end I didn't really care what happened. This one, I really enjoyed. No, it wasn't Citizen Kane, nor was it Dead Alive, but if somebody was looking for either of those things they came to the wrong movie. Howling 5 had a creepy atmosphere, some actual characters, and an interesting plot, and in that it did pretty well.

No. The Marsupials was like vomit level worse. Marsupial werewolves? Really? How about Tofu Werewolves?

Best of the series that I have seen (parts of I, II, III, parts of IV, V). I thought the second one had some potential - it has some cool ideas/scenes but seems ruined by terrible editing, some bad acting, a few stinker scenes and some pretty poor looking werewolves. The first never particularly captivated me - perhaps because its not set in the Werewolf's 'home country' so to speak. Same with III and IV.

The fifth installment has a pretty cool premise, even with the stretch of the Count's poor skills of deduction. The werewolf for once looks like a 'real werewolf' to me - not one of these ape or monkey-men looking werewolves. Plus it seems massive and extremely strong, like when it bursts through an oak door. You never get a good look at it either - perhaps due to a low-budget, but its still an effective treatment. The music and setting is great too.

Yes, this one is one is the best next to part one.

reply

i think its almost equal to part one, but i wouldn't necessarily say better. either ways its light years ahead of those horrible sequels.

after the first this is the best of the series

This is definitely the best Howling. I can remember watching it when I was like 10 and never being able to sleep that night. I had nightmares for a while and kept hearing werewolves. Ugh it gave me the shutters! But that's a good thing. I just hope the remake is good!

Some you guys must be smoking something really bad to think this load of crap is better than the first Howling. I remember watching this when I was 15 years old on HBO in 1989.

Yeah I agree. Though Part 5 is better than most of the other sequels, it is still a far cry from the original.

i love this one as well as the original nightmare. this had a great premise of 12 little Indians meets howling. great tension, and a great score!

It's my favorite as well. Not as good as the first, but still the one I watch the most.

I love to love my Lisa.

I wouldn't say it's the best of the series (so far I have enjoyed the first film the most), but I do think it was very good. I loved the musical score and the gloomy, Gothic feel of the castle which was the perfect setting for a movie.
