Almost 20 years...

Man, this makes me feel old. Can you believe that in a year and a half this movie will be 20 years old? I was 9 when it came out and I really liked it...It's also the first movie I ever saw a "Behind the scenes" special on. I watched it again a few years ago and it held up pretty well. Sure some of the special effects and jokes are dated, but I completely forgot about the strained-marriage part of the story and that added some drama that didn't feel forced. I thought the characters had heart. Even when they had stereotyped/cookie-cutter personalities, they still had some development and growth. Each one of them evolved. So many kids' movies have smart-mouthed kids that make the grow-ups look like idiots and some goal is achieved without there being much character development--very few lessons learned (I don't mean in a moral sense, but in a character-learns-something-about-self sense) Every main character in this movie winds up a different character than he or she was at the beginning.

I glanced at the back of the DVD and saw there were no special features (except the Roger Rabbit cartoon that was originally released with it in the theater). It would be cool if they release a 20th anniversary one to add SOME kind of behind-the-scenes featurette...even if they just put that 1/2 hour one I saw back in '89 on there.

I was even younger than 9, but I too feel old as well.

Good idea. DVDs with no extras are really a let down.

I was about 3 when I saw it at a drive in theater. I still remember that far back. I can't believe it's been that long.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

I'll be 19 by then :( But my gosh I just saw it on TV and just watched it right away (well, blew up my kid) and made me cry in the end because it reminded me of the great childhood I had back then (I was 4-5-6 when I saw it over and over on TV).

This will always be one of those movies I'll never forget in my heart. Sad I'll be old...but wow this is so heart warming XD I LOVE the movies. Man movies back then are still great for me today.

Ah, yes...1989. I saw this at the movies when it came out that summer of '89. Better known as the first summer of the sequels.Besides Batman and Honey,I shrunk the Kids, we got another James Bond..Licence to Kill, another Star Trek..5 The Final Frontier,Another Indiana Jones TLC,Karate Kid 3, Lethal Weapon 2, Ghostbusters 2,Nightmare on elm street 5. Yes, I am hoping Disney will release in 2009 a 20th anniversary edition of this movie, and in widescreen, finally!

What's funny, is that I remember seeing virtually all of those movies that summer. It was a very hot summer and we didn't have AC, so we spent a lot of Saturday afternoons at the theater and evenings at the drive in.

A Special Edition would be nice.

It's now 22 years old!

I wasn't born yet when this movie came out lol So, I'm not surprised it's been over 20 years. Came out summer 1989, and i was born November 1989

ladies love me. I'm on my cool J - Chris Brown, "Look At Me Now"

I was about 13-14 years old. This has always been a nostalgic favorite of mine. The special effects looked interesting, but they were never that great, even in 1989. Some shots were impressive, like the dad nearly eating the kid in the Cheerio, but I remember thinking the ant looked silly and fake back then. But it looked interesting or "kinda cool" though, if that makes sense. Kinda like how you knew the special effects in 2002's Spider-Man weren't that great but it still looked better then no special effects at all.

it's even older now as 2012 is closer

Exactly what I thought. I saw this in theatres, got a daughter now, soon gonna be a doctor. "Godamn you really can't consdider yourself a teenager anymore."

I can definitely relate to that feeling. That past 20 years have really flown by. My big realization came when I hit about 30 and was no longer a recent college grad or even a "young adult".

reply

And now it is almost 30 years (!) That really makes you feel old:)

reply

I can't believe it's been almost 30 years either! I hope a better DVD/Blu Ray release will happen as a result of that. Disney has given better DVD/Blu Ray releases to other live action films of their's which did not do as well as this one. This was a franchise at one point.

reply

That's actually insane. I grew up with these movies and loved them! πŸ˜€

reply

I agree! With the exception of the third one these movies were great, and I feel like it's a disservice to the fans that the DVD release for the first two films was such a sorry one.

reply

This makes me want to watch them again. 😊

reply

They do hold up! Let's just cross our fingers that eventually there will be a better DVD or BluRay for this.
