Is Eddie supposed to be male??

I've seen this movie MANY times although its been probably 10 years since I last saw it. I get the feeling though that Whoopi Goldberg's character is supposed to be a man. I mean the name Eddie, is a tip off right there, do you know any women named Eddie? Also I swear when she tells Homer (Jim Belushi) her name he laughs and says something to the effect of "that's a girl's name". Which makes no frickin sense at all. I got the sense that the character was supposed to be a man and someone else said the same thing.

No I think she was a lesbian because she was telling Homer her name was Edwina which is a girls name and Homer goes thats a womans name and she says Homers a fags name haha stuff like that and Homer didnt know better obviously and James Belushi did a good job in this he was so pitiful in this movie he seriously potrayed a retarded man very well.

I also got the feeling the role was originally intended for a man, but Whoopi somehow ended up with the role. Was it her talent which got her the role, or her 'relationships' in hollywood?

A lot of Whoopi's roles were meant for men or non-sexual. I always thought of this one as more androgynous.

Dammit Carol Sue, where is the vodka?!
