Is this based on a true story?

I decided to go ahead and buy the VHS version of this film from amazon.com. I was just wondering as to whether this was based on a true story or not because in the end, there is a text epilogue that tells us how Alex and Chris have been living so far. Does anybody know?

Well they didn't really decide what they were going to do at the end there. I think it was just to give the audience some closure.
