Jerry and Elvis

Was there really some sort of rivalry between Jerry and Elvis Presley or was this something the film made up? The scenes invovling Elvis were a bit bizarre. They seem to portray the King in a less than flattering light.

I've wrestled with reality for 35 years, and I'm happy to state I that finally won out over it.

Elvis and Jerry were friends for the most part, up untill the 70's when Jerry tride to drive his Rolls Royce through the gates of graceland and threaten to shoot Elvis with a WWII hand gun, Jerry was arrested on the spot ceck out his mug shot on smokinggun.com.

When Elvis was on the verge of going into the army there was a lot of speculation abour who would take his spot as the King of Rock n Roll. I don't think Jerry Lee Lewis was the only contender, and as it turns out, nobody really stole the crown in the end anyway.

I think they played up the rivalry a tad too much

I'm a bigger Lewis fan than a Presley fan.....BUT....

...I don't think Elvis saw him as a threat or even as a rival. Any rivalry that existed was coming almost exclusively from Jerry's point-of-view. Elvis had what---a dozen #1 hits? Jerry Lee had two big hits that remarkably, did not reach #1 on the pop charts. (It's no disgrace. Chuck Berry didn't have a certified #1 hit until the 1970's.) Elvis had starred four blockbuster motion pictures. Jerry Lee had made cameo appearances in two films ("Jamboree" & "High School Confidential").

Plus, the Colonel made sure that Elvis had recorded plenty of material before going into the service. RCA could keep releasing Elvis singles for the duration of his Army hitch.

When I first heard Jerry Lee, my first impression was he sounded like Elvis. He doesn't to me now, but back then he did. He never had the quantity of hits though. I really only remember Whole Lotta Shakin', Great Balls of Fire, and vaguely High School Confidential.
