msladysoul, until just a few years ago here in Texas, children as young as 12 could get married legally as long as either the girl was pregnant or the child's parent signed a permission slip. It was only changed recently when a certain large family with their own religion moved to Texas so that they could get around the laws in other states that made it illegal to marry before age 16, no matter whose permission you had.
In many states, and in many rural areas, all throughout this country, minors can still marry - some without their parents' permission. When you talk about celebrities getting in trouble for messing with underage girls, that's because they were doing just that - messing with them, not marrying them.
Pick up a history book sometime - there are many laws still on the books in many state that have never been changed. For instance, every year in MIssissippi, someone on the floor of the state legislature proposes that women be allowed to have the right to vote, since it's still on the state books that they can't, and teh vote fails every year. The legislators evidently think it's very funny.

There's nothing wrong with 18 and 35. Hell, I know a couple where the chick is 18 and the guy is 50, and they're the greatest couple I've ever seen. Seriously. I didn't think of JLL as a perv in the movie though, he seemed to really love his cousin, he didn't come off as a pedophile at all. I'm not saying that 13 year olds should run around with twenty somethings, because 99.9% of the time the twenty something is a creepy sex predator, but they made the love affair seem pretty innocent in this movie.

In some Muslim countries, 50 year old men can marry 5 year olds and it's legal. There was this one article where a 50 something rich mayor married a 5 year old from a very poor family. On their wedding night, he couldn't fit inside her so he took a knife a sliced her vaginal opening so he could fit and have sex. She eventually bled to death and a doctor came in and examined her. Her parents didn't create a commotion, the doctor simply pronounced her dead without misdeeds. No one in the town thought there was anything wrong with what happened. I guess in their place, legal and right have their meaning.
