If his marriage to that 13 year old was legal, why the backlash?

I mean, as disgusting as it may sound, if it's legal, then it couldn't be THAT controversial/unusual/taboo, right?

So, why the backlash like he had raided a crib and married an 8 year old?

I didn't see him in the movie once stating "Hey, back home this is LEGAL, it's common practice, so get a grip".

There are some places where it is legal to have multiple wives, or marry someone of the same gender. This would be frowned on in other places.

I thought it was a little over the top, when they rolled out the baby carriage during the concert in England. These are supposed to be his fans, who still bought tickets and went to his show regardless of the controversy. Those running the show were making money off of him. You would think they would be the last people who would try a stunt like that.

Aha, but in the USA, it's known that age of consent varies state to state. So how come there (never mind Europe) his career was also killed?

I don't remember Giuliani (NYC mayor) getting any backlash over marrying his cousin.

I mean, why did he suffer in the South, where it was legal?

50's puritan morals overrode their common and monetary sense?

At the time, marrying your 13 year old cousin was an acceptable ainnd legal practice in certain smaller parts of the US. However, it was largely unacceptable to other parts even if it was legal because a 13 year old is a child. While I dont think that would have killed his career entirely for some people, the fact that he got a licence and married a thirteen year old child without her parents consent and behind their backs most defintely would kill his career. That would kill anyones career even now and youd be facing charges.
