Anyone catch Johnny Depp's cameo?

I can't believe a bunch of little lovesick teenage girlies haven't started 500 different threads on this board about how dreamy Johnny Depp is in this movie (even though you only see him for one second and only his back is shown).

When Brian comes to school in his preppy clothes for the first time about halfway through the movie, all his classmates are in that outdoor courtyard and are so shocked to see him not in skater rags, the camera cuts to one of them running up to the pay phones and saying "Quick, dial 911!"

That, my friends, was Johnny Depp, as evidenced by the unmistakeable sound of his voice and that 21 Jumpstreet haircut he had at the time.

Just a little bit of particularly useless trivia for you to ponder/refute/commend. Enjoy.

Holy crap! I'm going to have to watch it again now, and slow frame that scene!

I think Johnny Depp could probably turn boys in lovesick teenage girlies. :)

looks a bit skinny to be johnny

If that's Johnny Depp then the guy he snatches the phone from must be John Candy.

reply

No it was Johnny Candy

That can't be Deep, I agree it do sound like him a bit but... Doesn't appear like him. Besides, wouldn't he be mentioned in the credits if it really was him?

I looked at it about a dozen times and I still can't tell one way or the other if it's him. The sound means nothing because chances are that kid who grabs the phone is not the voice you are hearing. You cannot see his mouth so that audio is likely added during production in the studio..... over-dubbed probably.

But I will say this..... This movie was 1989, Depp was born in 1963, that means he was 26 when this movie was made.... There is NO WAY in heck that the kid that grabs the phone is 26 years old no matter who he is....

If this movie was made a decade earlier I might be willing to consider that it was Depp because definitive proof is tough from the film.... but no that is not Depp......

What does it matter when Johnny Depp was born? I'm not saying the person is Johnny Depp. I don't think it is, but Johnny Depp didn't look his age...which is one of the reasons he was in 21 Jump Street. He definitely could have passed for a high school student in 21 Jump Street so it stands to reason that he could pass for a high school student in Gleaming the Cube. He was kinda like Ralph Macchio who was in his 20s when he made The Karate Kid. He simply didn't look his age. I'm the same way. People all the time think I'm a good 10 years younger than I am. I still get carded when I buy liquor even though I'm over 30. It has nothing to do with age.

I watched the scene again, and paused the frames.. I don't think it looks like him. And while the voice is a little like his, it's more like his 'english accent' which he has no reason to use.

reply

Ok; the voice doesn't even sound like his, and I personally think the guy is too skinny and short to be Johnny... So basically, what you're basing this on is a haircut, since we only see the back of his head and the side of his face... Yes, the hairstyle is similar, but is it that uncommon to see hair cut the same way?? I don't think so.

However, the main point is... You're on IMDB, the worlds biggest resource for information about movies... They have uncredited parts here too, and nowhere does it list Johnny Depp as being involved with Gleaming the Cube... Don't you think someone else would have asked him about it, and if they did, why wouldn't he admit to being there?! Applying the theory of Occam's Razor, the simplest explanation would be that you are in fact wrong, so I'm gonna go with that...

Touché my good man. Kudos for keeping this thread alive though. I admit I may very well be mistaken about the actor grabbing the phone. Can't believe folks are still replying to this thread :-)
