Remember how big Skating was in 1985-'89 and then by 1991 it was gone

Skating seemed to go underground during much of the 90s, practiced by only it's most dedicated fans, before it soared back into vogue in the later 90s/early 2000s.

I only say that b/c I remember skating around 1992 or 1993 and some other kids where like "oh that's so damn 80s!". It wasn't until around 1999 that skating kinda shed it's "eaauu, the 80s" stigma.

I saw plenty of skateboarders at college during the 90s.

Skateboarding is one of the staples of extreme sports, which was very popular during the 90s. Most likely, this movie is one of the reasons that many kids of that decade got into it.

Yeah I missed the skate board era and still was too young when the trick bike fad came and went. For my generation it was blading. By that time though I was fully into sports, especially baseball so I never bladed the way a lot of guys did. But I did love the movie Airborne in those years. I still get nostalgic as hell when I see that, it takes me right back to 1993-95 years.

It was mainstream in the beginning, hence movies like this, because people were fascinated with modern skating. It has stayed very popular since, but more focused by actual skaters.

Dead post from imdb, but skating is an Olympic sport in the summer games at Tokyo, Japan 2021.

"by 1991 it was gone" LOL

reply

Yeah nowhere near gone. If anything it didn't even reach its peak till early 2000's. With all the Tony hawk Playstation games. I might be biased though, I only started skating around 2001 when I was 9 years old. I'm still going as well! This Olympics skate coverage has got me keen to go for a strap on my board. Haven't had ride in months.

I certainly haven't done a historical deep dive on the history of skating and its popularity, but I do recall the mid-to-late 80s, and perhaps very early 90s, as being a very special time for skating. That seems to me to have been a golden era of sorts.
