Was this a one-time viewing for anyone else?

I remember being hyped up to see this when it came out and left completely underwhelmed, so much so that I never bothered renting it on VHS nor when it aired on Cable TV afterwards. I just changed the channel.

ITS A STEP DOWN FROM THE ORIGINAL BUT STILL A LOT OF FUN WITH A GOOD AMOUNT OF QUALITY GHOSTBUSTER MOMENTS...I RENTED IT MANY TIMES...OWNED IT ON VHS,DVD AND NOW BLU RAY...I HAVE FOR SURE SEEN THE ORIGINAL TWICE AS MANY TIMES,BUT THE SEQUEL IS WORTH SOME LOVE.

Not for me, as a kid I actually liked part 2 because I thought the original was a bit too dark for my liking but have loved the cartoons, as an adult I have a hard time deciding which movie I like between the first two, while the original is the better made film of the two I personally enjoy watching 2 more because of the memories.

reply

Wow, you're the first person I've encountered who thought part 1 was "dark". My little brother loved part 1 and he was about 5/6 years old when we watched it in theaters. Different spooks for different tooks I guess

reply

I'd say it's "darker" in the sense that it's more "adult" (i.e. crude) in its overall tone and humor. Venkman's borderline sexual predator behavior, the "This man has no dick" line & the "ghost blowjob" scenes felt jarring & out of place for a series that would largely be aimed at children. There was also noticeably more smoking and alcohol drinking in the original. I much preferred Ghostbusters 2 to the original in part because it was more accessible for children without losing any of its punch or feeling sanitized. I think the humor and chemistry between the main actors actually improved. Ironically I felt the sequel had a much scarier (& significantly better) villain.

“This man has no dick,” I always loved that line, and you’re right about Venkman’s predatory behavior, and I agree about the sequel being scarier and having a significantly better villain.

reply

I like this one almost as much as the original.

reply

No, not at all. I always considered this to be one of the few examples out there of a sequel that was just as good as the original.

I've never understood why a lot of people didn't like this one, including several people who worked on it. I think it's great.

reply

It's not like Die Hard 5 or Terminator Genisys where people are "No no you fucked it up" or something made that's pointless.

reply

Nope. It's one of my most enjoyed childhood movies and watched it numerous times. I still enjoy watching it to this day and strongly prefer it over the original. I liked that it was a bit more family friendly (less bad language and sex jokes) in a way that didn't feel forced, tame or corny. I also generally liked the jokes & the chemistry between the actors better in this movie. It hands down had the better villain as well IMO. I had no idea until years later that Ghostbusters II was often considered the "bad" one & still don't get why that is apart from a case of "original" nostalgia.

reply

Yes, this movie is mostly trash. Viggo is a weak villain and Janosz is cringe.

reply

I liked it a ton as a kid but can see now how they toned down things like no one smokes and they made Jeanine look like her character from the cartoon.

reply

Nope. I think I've seen it more than the original. I liked the original but II was definitely more my speed as a kid.
