Takes place in 2002?

The timeline is so screwed up that it probably does.

I don't know how anyone came up with 2002, because the movie doesn't give any indication of how long it has been since part 7. However, you can somewhat figure a timeline up until part 7:

Part 1 - 1979 (see Pamela Voorhees' gravestone in part 4)

Parts 2 through 4 - 1984 (takes place 5 years after the events of part 1, and those three movies all take place over the course of several days)

Part 5 - 1989? (Tommy Jarvis was 12 in part 4; I'm guessing he's supposed to be about 17 in part 5)

Part 6 - 1994? (5 years later is just a guess, making Tommy 22)

Part 7 - 2004 (at the beginning, during the flashback to when Tina was a child, Jason was shown chained to the rock in Crystal Lake, with his clothes and gloves looking fresh like at the end of part 6, and the present scenes with adult Tina and rotted clothes/gloves Jason take place 10 years after that)

The biggest question mark is part 6; it could have been less than a year after part 5 or it could have been 5 years or more. Tommy Jarvis looks significantly older in 6 than in 5, but of course, it was a different actor too. In reality, Thom Mathews is only 2 years older than John Shepherd, and they were both in their mid or late 20s when they played Tommy Jarvis, but Mathews looked older for his age than Shepherd did. Shepherd looked like a teenager and Mathews looked like he was in his mid 20s.

so it does. i like to think it takes place in august 2001.
