Denzel's Accent

Did anyone else think his accent in this film was terrible? i mean dont get me wrong, i know this was one of his early films and i think denzel is an awesome actor but in this i had no idea what the hell it was supposed to be. Maybe its just a brit thing because we know what we sound like but he kinda made me laugh throughout the whole thing. Then again, i bet theres a lot of brit actors/actresses who do terrible american accents to keep you yanks laughing =D

There are so many "American" accents that it really doesnt matter to most. Some New England accents even sound British, so its hard for some to notice the difference. The only way Ive learned is to observe the subject matter, British people often talk about "wankers" alot, kinda creepy if you ask me.

Theres a lot of "British" accents too, cockney is one of the most famous we have and theres a certain way of doing it. Unfortunately its not something everyone can do (I cant and i have close cockney relatives) and Denzel is one of them.

As to "wankers" meh, some people say it, some people dont. It is kinda like the English equivalent of the American use of *beep*

I'm American and his accent was pretty hilarious. I watched this movie because as soon as I read what it was about I thought to myself, "Oh this'll be good..." It was pretty awful.

I disagree I thought his accent was great. Better than Don Cheadle's in the Oceans' franchise.

I thought it was pretty decent, all things considered. When he started yelling he started to sound a bit more American. Plus, remember that his character is meant to be from St. Lucia, not the UK, and in large parts of the English-speaking Caribbean people sound American, like in the Bahamas or Barbados. Even in British Overseas Territories like the Cayman Islands or the Turks and Caicos they sound mainly American. And I agree, his accent was a lot better than Don Cheadle's.

save me from the ranks of the freaks who suspect they could never love anyone

Yeah,i agree Denzil's south London accent was pretty good.

It was passable and better than Dick Van Dyke's.

Its that man again!!

It was good enough. Not as bad as Brad Pitt's Irish accent in Devil's Own.

Yeah,i agree Denzil's south London accent was pretty good.

I thought so too. Wasn't bad, I think he had a bit of trouble with it in parts but his performance was great too.

It's obviously a Brit thing. You can't go on any board where an American does an accent without seeing at LEAST one thread B & Ming about the accent.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

Watching it now, it's hit and miss. It's better than Costner's non-attempt as Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

I'll sleep with you for a meatball...

I don't think it matters if his accent is bad, do you care about his character? If your answer is yes; then Denzel has done his job in my eyes. I cared, and I can't believe I've never seen this film until today, and to be honest, I can't believe it got made.

I think it's a brilliant film, dark and depressing, it felt very real. These are the sorts of films they make, then try and bury, because they tell the truth. Thank God I don't really remember Thatcher's 80's!

I'd have believed the story more if he were an American expatriate who soldiered jointly with British forces and then retired.

Objection, your Honor. You can't preface your second point with first of all.
