Why is this movie supremely hated?

Ok, it never garnered any Oscars, but why did it get one star in virtually every review? Because it had such high expectations from the first one? (I won't say the original, that's from the 60's, I really like that one too!) I remember seeing this in the theater and really hating it, because I had absolutely loved The Fly with Jeff Goldblum so much, almost to the point of obsession...so maybe I'm answering my own question. But years later upon viewing this one it's not so unbelievably terrible...it just should've had another title maybe! Oh well.

I find it to be a charmless sequel without any of the wonder and about (maybe) 1/4 of the heart of the original. Gross-out special f/x with little logic. Ambiguous characters substituted with good/bad characters without any redeeming or contradicting values. This is a competent technical achievement of a 3rd rate pukathon in my book.

They didnt matter in the larger realm ...but they still mattered. Thats what struck me as pathetic.

...while I agree with some of the flaws that the second poster points out, I still find this film to be awesome. Obviously it lacks much of what the original possessed, but this film was awesome. It even had some different themes that the original didn't. Yeah, it could have been given more "charm" and a little more believability in the last 20 minutes or so, but I love to see Martin let all those goons at Bartek have it... they were asking for it.

I'm not a control freak, I just like things my way

For me, THE FLY II is better than THE FLY.

I think it's hated so much because it's not a patch on Cronenberg's.
Although it still good imo and is definatly under rated.

They are both 2 very different films. I liked Fly 2 for what it was. Just a monster movie, with action and gore. Where the first one is more of a drama movie, between characters. It's all about the hard time the characters are going through. I like them both.

See you in the funnies.

I dunno, I like it, but only for what it is. It feels like they were trying as hard as possible to make a sordid video nasty, and they succeeded fantastically.

reply

Definitely. I knew it was different from the first, I didn't care. I loved the gore, the action, the effects, and of course the fly monster in the film was kick ass!

See you in the funnies.

Perhaps because is such an awful movie in comparison with Cronenberg's version.

I mean, everybody was expecting to see something as good as David Cronenberg's "The Fly", but the movie turned out to be a complete mess, a major cinema disaster.

It really isnt all that bad. Stoltz is a good lead, the love story was good enough and it wasnt all about the action. It had more action than the first, but it didnt really kick in until the last block of the film. Its still very much the characters like Cronenbergs film, but like someone else said, the villians are a little to "evil genius" like and its loses some of it merit with such over the top baddys. But Fly II isnt nearly as bad as its made out to be. A solid sequel to a brilliant first film.

I give a 7/10
