I've never seen this movie all the way through, just watched the last half hour last weekend, but having grown up in Indiana farm country, I thought the exact same thing. That small area wouldn't make that much difference.

I was driving through a cornfield the other day. Fairly modest in size, but infinitely huger than a baseball field. And I got thinking about that Field of Dreams scene too. I don't buy it. But in the context of the film, I think he was neglecting all his fields, not just mowing down a small piece of one of them. Maybe that farm was really damn small. I don't remember.
