Even in the 1980's it was very hard to get a baseball themed movie made.

In fact concerning the other fantasy movie with a baseball theme from five years earlier, the Natural:

The Natural was the second film ever released by TriStar Pictures. It was supposed to be the first film ever released by the new TriStar Pictures, but they felt baseball movies don't do well, so instead "Where the Boys Are '84" was released first, in April 1984, with The Natural following in May 1984. This according to a recent interview of director Barry Levinson on Costas at the Movies.

But as to whether a movie like Field of Dreams would be made today: absolutely! It is a fantasy movie, and a liberal-themed fantasy movie at that. Hollywood loves both of these, so why not?

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

The Natural, Field of Dreams and Bull Durham; There's 3 for starters that I liked and were made in the eighties.

I guess it's relative and dependent on how many baseball movies you would expect to see made in a decade.

The quote was from one of the directors who actually made one of the baseball movies. There are similar stories from the others.

The fact the movies were made, does not imply that it was not a battle to do so...and then of course as Hollywood is akin to do, once there is success, they finally get on board.

I'm not suggesting they're not.

They do continue to pop up reasonably regularly however.

More recent ones that I've seen and liked would include The Rookie and Money ball.

I don't know, it seems like in the 80s/early 90s Baseball movies were everywhere

The Natural
Eight Men Out
Bill Durham
Field Of Dreams
Major League
Mr. Destiny (kinda, even Taking Care Of Business to a degree)
A League Of Their Own
Mr. Baseball
Cobb
Babe

We learned more from a three minute record than we ever learned in school

Well, I think it could be made today. In fact, if it were made today there’d be no need to switch out J. D. Salinger in favor of a fictional character - that is, unless legal representatives of Salinger's estate have as much appreciation and humor concerning the book and film as Salinger himself had, which was little to none at all.

Would it be worth the time, effort and money? That’s the question. Society has changed a fair bit the last 28 years, so that I have to wonder if there’d be enough of an audience to justify it. That’s the other question.

The age of the average baseball fan is 57, significantly older than for any other sport. Paid attendance and TV viewership is down. The handwriting is on the wall. Football and NASCAR are the national pastimes.

‘Bye, ‘bye, Slowball.

reply

NASCAR? lol

For at least sixty years, pro football, college football, pro basketball, and college basketball have been more popular in the U.S. than pro baseball, and the public couldn't care less about college baseball. Referring to baseball as "the national pastime" is just a tradition left over from the 1920s, '30s, and '40s.

Brewsters millions and major league too

reply

Only if it had zombies.

reply

It wouldn't get made today because it would be too slow paced for the new fans of baseball.

reply

If anything, today's baseball fans are quite used to slow pace. I stopped watching a few years ago and I grew up with the sport.

reply

Not enough but comic book cgi, too much writing.

So no.
