At least 50,000 Americans would have died but for the A-bombs
Back in 1990s, when the 50th anniversary of the bombings came, you had a bunch of apologists saying that the dropping of the bombs didn't save 1 million Allied casualties, as Truman had used to justify dropping the bombs. At most, the war would have only lasted a few more months after September 2nd, 1945, when Japan did surrender, and the casualties would have been only 50,000/month.
The Wall in Vietnam has the names of 58,000 dead.
Here's from Wikipedia:
"A study done for Secretary of War Henry Stimson's staff by William Shockley estimated that conquering Japan would cost 1.7 to 4 million American casualties, including 400,000 to 800,000 fatalities, and five to ten million Japanese fatalities."
