Something gets mucked up along the way.

The japanese colonel surrenders, and then...what? Next time we see Nolte he's surrendering himself and the col. to the Aussies. Sure, he renounced violence earlier, but he hated that Colonel, right? It's like significant chunks of the plot were axed. The cannibilistic actions of the Japanese were just a throwaway line. The African (McRae) and the remaining Aussie (or was he a Brit?) staying with Nolte...

And did Nolte's character spend a lot of time shaving or what?

Also, Nolte at times almost seemed a bit campy, like he was a doing a Braveheart parody some 6+ years before Braveheart was released. I suppose that fit with his quasi-madness.

I have a DVD copy of a version released in Hong Kong that has scenes not shown on the US release. One is a meeting between Capt Fairborne and Col Mitamura (sp?) after his capture in which the Col explains his actions and the canabalism part. Good scene for answering questions but added time best seen in a director's cut or special edition. It really did nothing for the flow of the movie at that point.

Yeah, back in 1989 critic Gene Siskel had trouble with NOLTE's performance in this movie as well.

The film did seem to suffer from choppy editing.
