Jeff seems bored... the love story boring...why was this made?

If the Bridges brothers wanted to work on something together couldn't they have found something more interesting than this jaded, tired vehicle? Pfeiffer is at her peak of hotness but even she seems bored with everything around her, and her getting in the sack with Jeff is beyond predictable. Usually Jeff Bridges is an exciting presence but here he seems like he could care less. I liked the various Seattle club locales but mostly you feel your life passing by watching this.

I have a different outlook on this film. I think it's a gem. It's complicated in a way with how it shows the complexities of sibling relationship and how work and personal life intertwine. I love the romantic relationship and how it was building. I enjoyed the friction, the drama, the fighting and the ambiguous ending. All of the characters were not as they seemed on the surface and that was surprising as the film moved along. Jack was not a one note cool dude who didn't care about anything. He was actually a very sensitive and sad person who needed to be loved and appreciated. He finally got the courage to go after his dreams after a fight with Susie. Speaking of Susie, she was not a one note hooker with a heart of gold either. She started out rough and crass in a way, but as the film progressed you get to see this loving caring woman who had no other intentions but to help and love Jack. She was quite impressive. Then you have Frank. The hard nosed business man of the act and yet you get to see how he was always looking out for his little brother Jack. He wanted nothing but success for the both of them. He was a jerk in the beginning of the film to Susie, but then came the balcony scene and he was so sweet. I loved how he was dancing with Susie and told her that he never kissed his wife on New Year's Eve; he was always working. Broke my heart and you can see a different side to him. He was a hard worker and just wanted to provide the best life he could for his family. I love this film!

I didn't see it as a love story. I saw it as a story of unfilled promise and unfilled potential.

Sounds like you actually subconsciously connected with the characters, because that's one of the main themes of the film, particularly for Jeff's character. This movie is definitely not for everyone, but I think it's damn near perfect at what it sets out to do. Also, I wouldn't mistake the nonchalance of Jeff's character for nonchalant acting by Jeff himself.
