New shorter cut is quite disappointing

Was the original slow? a bit, but it was still hilarious.

I LOVE Erik. I've been waiting YEARS to see this on DVD. Now they release this new shorter cut, and I am SO disappointed. It feels rushed and choppy. Guess I'll have to hold on to my old LaserDisc of the original US cut.

I can't agree more. Many of the cuts and transitions are very abrupt and awkward. It is almost like they cut any and every quite moment that they could, IMO that does not necessarily make a for a better film. I have nothing but respect for Jones but in all due respect I do not think his son is a very good editor. I was also very much bothered by some of the audio changes that were made. The animalist growls that were added to Halfdan the Black’s skull helmet guards were just stupid. It was like they were attempting to imply that they were creatures or monsters in this cut. The other sound change that really bothered me was what was done to the Horn Resounding. They cut in over the original impressive and majestic sound effect a very shrill and annoying new sound. Also they totally forgot to dub in one of Tim Robbins lines in a majorly important part of the film and he is just yelling away with no audio at all except the score and sound effects.

I am not a fan at this son's cut and can't picture myself watching it again. It was not at all an enjoyable experience, which is a sad thing to say about one of my all time favorite movies. I guess I will have to keep hopping for a release of the original US cut I have always known and loved to be someday released.

Just not to be all negative what was done with the sound effects during the Dragon scene were a improvement over the original but I never had much a problem with it to begin with. The changes to the music in High Brazil were also a definite improvement over the original.

How can you justify removing 30 min out of any movie? Just the concept of removing that much out of a film should tell someone that it was butchered. And this version was totally. I've watched this movie so many times that I found myself saying lines where they should have been and the whole scene was removed. I rate this DVD 2 out of 5. And the 2 is only out of respect for the original version.

Wow, I could not agree more. This was a major disappointment. I loved this movie originally and couldn't believe how much it suffered from the editing. I thought perhaps my opinion of the movie was affected by my fondness for the original, but two of the people I just watched this with said it seemed like a television version severely edited for time.

Cutting out the Berserker build-up was unforgivable. Pulling dialog from scenes seemed amateurish. They removed any and all nuance. So much subtlety has been sacrificed...it feels like an MTV quick cut version.

How the hell can you cut 1/3 of a movie out, and expect their to be any cohesion? Or maybe the question I should be asking is "Why?".

Just as all of the other posts state, this new, shorter cut is far inferior to the original. The pacing is all wrong, thus moving the film along so fast that it is over before it manages to get going, and the shuffling of scenes doesn't work either. Plus, I can't figure out what was wrong with the original length. I never felt the film to be bloated or the humor to be stretched thin. I thought it was an offbeat, fun little fantasy film whose humor owed a bit to Python, but also managed to stand on its own.
I would have preferred that both versions of the film be on the disc rather than only the new cut.
Too bad. I really did love this movie.

The Director's Son's Cut sucks. Tomorrow I am going to buy the Blu-ray. It appears to have less extra features yet I prefer the HD and a better cut.
