Original Album

Can anyone tell me how to get the original album that was actually performed by Eddie and the Cruisers, and what was the album called?

reply

There was no real Eddie and the Cruisers band. All the music from the original Eddie and the Cruisers movie and the Eddie Lives! sequel was performed by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. You can buy their music (including the soundtracks to both movies) online at places like amazon.com.

If you want the CD to the original movie, look under Eddie & the Cruisers -- Soundtrack.

For the sequel, try Eddie & the Cruisers 2: Eddie Lives! -- Soundtrack

One more thing: John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band was never really able to replicate the success they had with the Eddie and the Cruisers soundtracks so, after making a few albums, they briefly changed their name to Eddie and the Cruisers as a marketing strategy. As I understand it, that was the record company's idea and it didn't last very long.

I'm a John Cafferty fan and really enjoy both soundtracks -- I don't know if the band is still performing anywhere, but I hope they are!

Weren't there two "original albums" though? I have a soundtrack from the first movie which doesn't include "Tender Years." Yet I've read that there's a soundtrack that does.

Britwit --

I bought a new Eddie & The Cruisers Soundtrack CD in 2006 on amazon.com. (I previously had the soundtrack on vinyl, if you can believe that :)
My CD does include Tender Years and Wild Summer Nights. These two songs were apparently left off a previous version of the soundtrack album, as you've stated, and replaced by songs called "Runaway" and "Mockingbird."

I don't know what happened with the previous version; maybe there was some issue with obtaining the rights to Tender Years and Wild Summer Nights. Or perhaps the record company miscalculated their popularity.

In any case, the version amazon is currently selling is from the Volcano label does include Tender Years and Wild Summer Nights. I'm personally a fan of both tunes, so am happy to own this version.

Oh, I can believe it all right. I'm the only guy I know who can't give up on tape casettes. :)

But Great. Thank you very much. Except for On The Dark Side, those are the two best songs in the movie. Now I've got an excuse to buy the CD.

Heck, I still have all my cassettes, and still listen to them. In fact, I still tape stuff off the radio on cassette. I have the original soundtrack on cassette. I bought it after seeing the movie on HBO, and about 6 months before Dark Side exploded onto radio.

And now, Anna Kournikova being spanked. (Whack) Bad Anna (whack) Bad Anna.

I actually have four Eddie and the Cruisers albums. Besides the two original motion picture soundtracks, I also have "Eddie and the Cruisers: The Unreleased Tapes" and "Live and in Concert" which is John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band doing some of the Eddie songs with some others. The Unreleased CD has a mix from both movies, while the Live CD only does songs from the first movie (IE, On the Dark Side and Tender Years, but no Running Through the Fire or Pride and Passion).

The fictional album (the one they talk about in the movies as being the one album they ever put out) was called Tender Years. You can see the name on the LP that's in Wordman's place in the first film.

To my knowledge though it's never been formally released or bootlegged, if you kinda copy and paste from both soundtracks though, you can get an idea of what it would've been like.

Wordman also mentions that there's twelve songs on it.

I would guess,
On the Dark Side
Runaround Sue
Down On My Knees
Hang Up My Rock & Roll Shoes
Boardwalk Angel
Tender Years
Wild Summer Nights

and MAYBE the NYC Song, only because in the second film he says that he wrote it a long time ago.

No clue what the rest would be though,
When the World Was Young and Season in Hell (obviously) would be from Season In Hell.
