MacKenzie

I just watched this movie for the first time. Really a wonderful flick! Anyone else think the Marlon Brando's portrayal of the character, "MacKenzie", is simply masterful? Brando is great in so many movies, especially as Vito Corleone in the godfather, but I think this movie shows that he can play a small part memorably in a movie without stealing the show.

I watched this movie recently also and thought the Brando piece was Ok but not worthy of an Academy Award nomination. I was thinking he must have been nominated just because he’s Brando. I like Brando, especially his early work, but did not think this small part was anything special. Just my opinion.

reply

I had no idea he was even nominated for an academy award for that role.

I agree with you. Brando is fabulous in this movie. Charming as always and full of humor. His reaction, in the court room, when he loses is magic.

reply

Yes, he was nominated.

He received his eigth, and final, Academy Award nomination for this role. It was his only nomination for Best Supporting Actor. And, as a small, supporting role, he is absolutely superb. I think he was very deserving of the nomination. Remember, he uses an accent the whole time, improvises often, is very humorous at times, and also very dramatic at times. He OWNS the few scenes he's in.

The nominees for supporting actor that year were Denzel Washington, Martin Landau, Dan Ackroyd, Danny Aiello, and Brando. Denzel won.

Damn, that's gotta give you some bragging rights, when you were a young actor and you beat Brando for the Oscar.

reply

Asolutely.
I saw this film many years ago, and the main reason it has stayed in my memory, and why one day i will want to see it again is Marlon Brando.
He is magnifficent in the court scene - i would say "unbeatable" except, of course, he was, by Denzel.

This was his first film appearance in a number of years and he did it for almost no money. His scenes were shot in England and the producers thought he would not turn up and apparently had another actor on standby.

Its that man again!!
