This beat Do the Right Thing foor the academy?

Driving Miss Daisy can't even hold a flame to Do the Right Thing. A
heartfelt, if outdated, story versus a manifesto. DotheRT redefined our
understanding of race in America. It's one of the most controversial
films of all time.

I can't help but see the irony. Current race issues and old race issues. I don't want to bash Morgan Freeman, his acting was great. But the whole package doesn't get close to what Spike Lee put together.

DotheRT losing the academy to this movie is one of the greatest upsets
in movie history.

reply

I think the Academy did not like Spike Lee. Only the screenplay got nominated. I remember when Kim Basinger got up and spoke out against the movie not being nominated because it was truthful was dead on.

reply

Rather than be negative - Spike Lee said he was thrilled and surprised to be nominated for his screenplay.

"I only work in black, and sometimes very very dark grey"

reply

Ah, yes. It did beat Do the Right Thing foor the academy even though it couldn't hold a flame.

When Miss Daisy made the comment that she had taught some of the stupidest children God ever put on the face of this earth, she could have been referring to the OP.

Driving Miss Daisy was released the week of Christmas and tripled in box office returns its opening weekend to Do the Right Thing's entire cinema run, so in truth, not enough members saw Lee's film to garner a win.

In addition to learning to type English correctly - you need to understand the meaning of the word "upset".

An "upset" is usually when the favourite is beaten by an outsider. DRRT was ALWAYS an outsider while DMD was a box office hit that was popular with more conservative Academy awards.

"Thank God For Darwin"

reply

DTRT? That piece of crap?!!! No wonder it lost.

reply

OP says that "DotheRT redefined our

I always wonder about people who have to have issues in society redefined for them by movies. Do you wake up every morning in a brand new world?

reply

I beg to differ. Both are great films in their own right.

reply

Do The Right Thing was a dreadful movie.

 The bad news is you have houseguests. There is no good news. 

reply

I love Driving Miss Daisy, but out of the nominees Born on the Forth of July should have won BP.

reply

Do the Right Thing losing was an "upset"??

Ummm, sure.

reply

racism in Hollywood at its finest. You notice they gave the old lady the Oscar and Morgan didn't get anything. gotta love institutionalized racism in America

reply

He lost to DDL for one of the greatest performances of all time. It wasn't racism, it was just bad timing. Freeman did win in Oscar for Million Dollar Baby years later, the idea that he lost because of racism is moronic bs.
