References to the 'The Godfather'

I just saw Time of the Gypsies for the first time after re-seeing The Godfather one week ago and a lot of similarities stroke me:
They concern (of course) the "second part" of the movie, starting with the jouney to Italy and the changes that Perhan goes through. First of all, he really acts like Al Pacino as Michael and is styled the same way after becoming one of the "leaders" of this mafia-like group. Following this logic, Ahmed has the role of Vito Corleone, and he especially looks like him after having his stroke. Means same "distorted mouth" as Marlon Brando.
Well, I can't really explain myself very well in englisch but I hope sombody else saw what I'm trying to explain.
Great movie by the way...

I've never even seen the Godfather and I noticed some references= which were totally intentional, by the way!

this isn't me, i'm not mechanical

It's funny you should mention that, for some reason Davor Dujmovic's performance reminds me of Dustin Hoffman though, I don't know why. Some pessimistic pragmatism of some kind

reply

I don't think they're just coincidences, if you watch Arizona dream Kusurica makes heavy reference to the Godfather and Raging Bull, showing his appreciation of american cinema (confirmed by references to Casablance in Black cat, white cat)

Kusturica has seen Godfather and Godfather Part II many times. So this is intentionnal.

- Who is God ?
- When you close your eyes and make a wish, God is the one who doesn't care about.

Just wanted to add that I too noticed parallels with the Godfather. Post-stroke Ahmed was definitely channeling Brando.

Indeed, many similarities, which multiply the fun while watching it. Great film!

What made the universe made me.

I thought to Godfather too when I watched the movie. The hardly talking boss was the most obvious.

But the appearance of the lead character was the main thing that reminded me of young Al Pacino.

One of the best movies I saw in the last couple years...

Two more similarities:

1. Fruits on the floor in two scenes (in hospital and on funeral)
2. A guy on the Perhans wedding puts his red bow-tie in his pocket to look like a rose
