the version that was shown in film theatres vs DVD

I watched this movie in Russia in the beginning of 1990s and it immediately became my absolute favourite film. It's still up there in the top three. When I watched the DVD in Canada years later it was missing the whole last scene of the mustached dude (the unkle?) talking to the Jesus Christ on the turned over cross. Now I see that there is a DVD version that is 6 minutes shorter than the version shown in film theatres. Why would someone delete the scene that was like the most poignant point in the movie? Or am I going crazy?

I think you are mistaken; i own two versions of the film; the theatrical version that runs 136 minutes, as well as a rare copy of the uncut mini-series that runs 270 minutes. that scene is in both versions.
