Best movie of the 1980s?

It sits at the top of this list that also includes The Shining, Ran and Raging Bull. Is it the best movie of the 1980s?

Definitely one of the most memorable & hands down the best white/black cultural mix up film ever imo, despite the fact of what I think about Spike.

The movie is good. But compared to BACK TO THE FUTURE I & II, BIG, BREAKFAST CLUB, DEAD POETS SOCIETY, E.T., PLATOON, RAGING BULL, SANTA SANGRE and TOOTSIE?

reply

It's up there. I also like both Back to the Future movies, Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, The Last Temptation of Christ, Once Upon a Time in America, Akira, Born of the Fourth of July, Brazil, The Thin Blue Line, and many others.

I liked Do the Right Thing, but I admittedly liked Born on the Fourth of July, Raging Bull and Tootsie better.

Tarkovski's -Nostalgia -Sacrifice
Kurosawa's -Ran -Kagemusha
-Stranger Than Paradise

If you dig deep enough, you'll probably find another 10 masterpieces of the 80's...

Is this a joke post? Raiders of the Lost Ark? Empire Strikes Back? Return of the Jedi? Terminator? Die Hard? Poltergeist? Stand By Me? The Thing? When Harry Met Sally? An American Werewolf in London? Ghostbusters? Gremlins? Young Gungs? Goonies? The Lost Boys? Planes, Trains, and Automobiles? The Karate Kid? The Last Starfighter? The Outsiders? Overboard? Pet Semetary? Revenge of the Nerds? And on and on and on.

The 80s had a ton of great movies. Do the Right Thing was not one of them.

Half the movies on your list are guilty pleasures at best -- and some not even. I remember laughing through Pet Sematary. Problem is, it was one of SK's scariest books. Could have been a terrifying movie, but it's just unintentionally funny.

Do the Right Thing stands the test of time, Rupert. I could go into detail about why, but it's getting late and I'm a working girl.

Lost Boys, Karate Kid and Goonies. Blatant attempt at wind up.

I've not seen Ran yet. The best I have seen are Raging Bull, Grave of the Fireflies then probably this.

I enjoyed DTRT. Particularly, Lee employed some great techniques with how he filmed certain scenes. But no, there are many superior films that came out of the 80's.

Blade Runner
The Empire Strikes Back
Raging Bull
Aliens
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Blue Velvet
Platoon
Full Metal Jacket

And many more.

The Shining is the best, this comes second. Third is The Breakfast Club.
