Help!! Best Asian Cinema Suggestions Wanted!!

Hi everyone,

Over recent years I have gotten into Hong Kong and Asian cinema in a big way. I’ve seen most of John Woo’s films (The Killer, Hard Boiled, A Better Tomorrow etc), Jackie Chan’s best (Police Story I & II etc), and a handfull of others. But I’m wanting to branch out more.

Unfortunately, as is the case with western cinema there is a mixture of very good, average and very bad films. So, I’m asking for the help of all of IMDB’s Asian cinema lovers to recommend their favourites. I know there are many gems out there just waiting to be found.

Cheers for reading this. If you can help, even better.

check out JSA. Its a pretty good korean political drama.

reply

Never heard of it before, but reviews look good so will check it out (also "Oldboy" by the same director, heard that mentioned a few times).
Cheers for the suggestion
Anything else?

reply

Have you seen "rashamon" or "memories of murder"?
And if your looking for horror, check out shutter.

from Korea's Park Chan-wook: 'Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance' and 'Sympathy For Lady Vengeance'
--> He is eccentric, dynamic, dark, and damn funny. A solid mix of art and entertainment. His two lead actors in 'Oldboy' and 'Lady Vengeance' give tour-de-force performances.

from Hong Kong's Wong Kar-Wai: 'Chungking Express,' 'In the Mood For Love,' 'Days of Being Wild'
--> He is the master of loneliness, longing, and failed romance. Visual style of cinematographer Christopher Doyle is legendary.

from China's Zhang Yimou: 'To Live,' 'Hero'

reply

Also, from Japan: Akira Kurosawa's "Throne of Blood" (considered to be the best Shakespeare movie adaptation in the world)
and Takehi Miike's short feature "Box"

Hi Everyone.

Appologies For Being Away From The Thread Soooo Long.

I Wanna Thank Everyone For Their Suggestions (I Hadnt Realised How Open I Made The Question).

Although I've Managed To See A Good Number Of The Movies Suggested (And I Wasn't Disappointed, I Can Tell Ya) I've Still Got A Long Way To Go.

Should Keep Me, And The Postman, Busy For Awhile.

Thanks Again

Try check out Musa the Warrior (The Warrior in the states) I would say more of an epic if that makes a difference for you. Shot very well, great story, good action, and well casted.

reply

Pretty Much anything ever made by Akiira Kirusawa, especially the Musashi Miyamoto trilogy, very long, but a stylistic use of action that i've never seen before. This one character builds up to using this one specific move on Miyamoto over the course of 2 movies, and well, i wont spoil it, but its interesting.

reply

Cheers For Those Suggestions Guys (Or Girls-Dont Wanna Offend Anyone!!).
I'll See If I Can Find Those, A Few Of Them Look Like They're Going Back Aways.

Have you seen Infernal Affairs (2002), IMDb rating 8.0, the top scorer of the pack?

Although I haven't seen any of the following ten HK cop-and-criminal genre thrillers, they are IMDb rated from 6.8 to 7.8 which is not bad at all. I will be watching them myself once I got the opportunity (in no particular order):

1. Um fa (1997), IMDb rating 7.3 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0168043/
2. PTU (2003), IMDb rating 6.9 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0250638/
3. Cheung Fo (1999), IMDb rating 7.1 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0220644/
4. Am zin (1999), IMDb rating 7.2 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0216165/
5. Yeshou xingjing (1998), IMDb rating 6.8 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0157366/
6. Fai seung dat yin (1998), IMDb rating 7.4 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0159432/
7. Chan sam ying hung (1998), IMDb rating 7.0 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0176809/
8. Chuen jik sat sau (2001), IMDb rating 6.8 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286635/
9. Wong gok hak yau (2004), IMDb rating 7.5 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0430772/
