Some people read into this movie way too much.

I don't even think Woo intended this film to be much more than an adrenaline rush of stylized over-the-top action. Scenes don't contain more than 4-5 lines of dialogue at a time and yet people on here are commenting on the film's profound character intimacy, emotional plot elements, yadda-yadda.

Give me a break. I laughed about every 3 to 5 minutes in this film because of the sheer glossing over at absolutely everything in the film other than moments when a gun isn't prominently centered in the screen in slow-motion during a cart wheel.

You can't even open a can of beer in a John Woo film without the froth projecting across the room.

And there's nothing wrong with that. I love John Woo films because of this, but in NO way can you give this film credit for anything other than it is: A John Woo film.

I think the reason many people read a lot into this film is that they feel an emotional tie to the characters. I've seen many John Woo films and this is the only one that ever made me sad. The ending and the pain that Chow Yun Fat feels through out the movie just struck a chord with me. Yes, it has all of the usual John Woo eye candy, but Hardboiled didn't make me feel any emotions. The Killer did and so I put it at a higher level than other John Woo films. I think that the concept of honor is highlighted in this film more than any other John Woo film and that hits a nerve as well.

John Woo loves action and obviously directs it beautifully, but he always talks about the profound themes that he wants to bring out in his movies. These themes are expressed in a highly romantic, over-the-top fashion, as well as in the juxtapositions and symbols that he places throughout his movies. The are certainly there if you look for them, expressed in a unique way unlike anything we have here in the West. But if you want to just enjoy the movie for it's over-the-top action and giggle at it, well, that's fine too.

For a film that was made in 1989, it sure made a deep influence on many filmakers in the 90's and today.

Stylistically speaking.

The movie's plot is a bit of a joke. Unbelievably, laughably unrealistic how our unbearably annoying female star holds NO ill feelings towards Chow Yun Fat's character for decieving her and betraying her trust, tricking her into falling for him and trusting him after he blinded her. Just amazing how Woo didn't see it fit to include any drama here.

Face it, the movie IS a dumb action movie. The story easily could be something special, but elements such as the huge hole mentioned above kill it. The INCREDDDDIBBBBLEEEE action is what makes the movie, it and it only.

"You clearly were not paying attention to the movie.

Until Li told her, Jennie didn't know that the person looking after her after she was blinded was the same person that blinded her. Her not knowing this allowed an opportunity for her to get to know him.

Jong did not trick her into falling in love with him. There is nothing of the sort in the movie. He simply felt terrible for what happened to her because she was at the wrong place and the wrong time and it was his mistake that lead to her being blind. "

Not sure why you think I wasn't paying attention.

I'm not saying he intentionally set out to trick her into falling in love with him. He of course wasn't some devious, dishonest jerkass like that. HOWEVER, he knew full well that IF she knew who he was, she wouldn't want him around her, and thus he deliberately withheld his true identity. He grew close to her by deceiving her as to who he really was. In a way, he did in fact trick her into falling for him, even if that wasn't his intention initially.

Once Jennie found out that this person who was looking after her, who she grew SOOOOOO close with, was in fact the man who blinded her, it would make sense for her to be pissed. It would make sense for her to be shocked, to be furious, to be hurt, confused, SOMETHING. Some sort of confrontation would/SHOULD take place. But it doesn't. We get nothing. The entire thing is bizarrely shrugged off as if it were no big deal. We're seriously to believe Jennie has NO strong feelings about this? She doesn't care at all that the man who blinded her(a man she was TERRIFIED of) has snuck back into her life and gotten this close to her without her knowledge? How can you not see that this is a MASSIVE flaw in the movies story?

"Considering how inaccurate you recalled events in this movie, it is clear that it's not the film that is dumb."

You somehow must have misinterpreted what I said, cuz at no point did I recall the movies events innaccurately.

"s proven above by me, the only hole here is in your attention span"

You shouldn't throw around absurd, dimwitted, baseless insults when its your reading comprehension that should be called into question.

"There is no way to "trick" someone into doing something unintentionally. When someone is tricked to do something by someone else it was with intent. "

Fine, he MISLED her into allowing him into her life. Is that better? My point remains the same. No reason to get all hung up over semantics. Either way he betrayed her trust. What matters is he inserted himself back into her life under false pretenses, she fell for him under false pretenses. She should be bothered by that on SOME level. It at the very least deserves to be addressed. The movie fails to do so. That is a big problem.

"and the movie does a thorough job of developing the kind of character Jennie is."

Hardly.

BTW, "ah jong selflessly took care of her so she loves him" hardly makes it believable for her to not care whatsoever about who he really is or that he blinded her/misled her.

"Jong did not hide who he was to her because he wanted her to fall in love with him or ever went out of his way to deceive her so that she could fall in love with him. Jong felt terrible what happened to her because she was at the wrong place at the wrong time and he made a mistake that cost her sight to be taken away.

The only intent he had was to right a wrong that he did and he could not accomplish that by telling her who he was. It was only through the course of him taking care of her that love blossomed. It was not the intent it just happened. "

Again, please stop summarizing the movies plot. Completely unnecessary.

Funny - the film that I saw had several rather lengthy scenes of characters discussing ethics, codes of honor and such in a rather on-the-nose manner.

I agree. I saw it and was disappointed, I've not seen any Woo films prior to this I don't think and I've certainly not become a fan either now that I have. His style to me looks clumsy to be honest, good action, good music and all of that and you can certainly enjoy the movie but it's not a great film by any means. I see some post about top 250, yeah... no. It's already overrated as it is.
