How is this not in the Top 250?

It's only the best action movie ever made, and probably the best Hong Kong movie ever. Million Dollar Baby is in the Top 250, but The Killer isn't. How is that possible?

reply

I think it used to be but for some reason it fell out.

reply

Infernal Affairs is kicking as probably the highest rated Hong Konger, due to the Departed. I need to see The Killer

did anyone maybe think about accepting the fact that action is a fading film genre especially these days?
i just watched the killer for the first time and i really dont want to make fans of it angry over here but it really didnt blow me away like i thought it would.

It's not in the top 250 because females under 18 gave it a one-point-four star average. That's the lowest I've ever seen from females under 18.

reply

Under 18s shouldnt be allowed to vote.. maybe that's why films like Hot Fuzz are in top 250 instead of great movies like this..

reply

That's the same reason Hard Boiled and George Romero's zombie films aren't. Don't sweat it, who cares what a bunch of 14 year old girls think about a film anyway.

+1
Especially women under 18, the votes from that sex/age group shouldn't even be counted in the total

Don't have a dig at a good film in Hot Fuzz 'cos this doens't get in. I blame the over dependancy on pure Hollywood instead. It's also the same for many excpetional Japanese films which should be in the 250. Why is the Ring not in it>?? Why is Audition not in it? Why is Goodfellas so over-rated?

I love Hot Fuzz and I love The Killer. There are also a lot of other underated films which are not in it. It is also unreliable as a top 250 due to most of the voting casted by a large demographic whom probably never will pick up an action film from Hong Kong with a picture of a baby on it (I know this from fact) or a mug shot of an action superhero they don't know about or even worse a Japanese person with a deranged face (Ichi The Killer!).

Additionally people are sometimes not interested in watching subtitles on their films and do not like the dubbing. Jackie Chan is famous as his dubbing is done by HIMSELF to back up the SUBSTANTIAL acting he has done in America. To get into America you need to film there or act there which is why Woo left Hong Kong. For me the best movies are made in Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea (contemporary).

Could be a good point, but they are only 20 that have voted for this movie, on 13000 votes, you cannot consider it as significant. So no, it's not because of the females under 18, bad point. BTW im not a female and im not under 18.

i don't think that is reason because ,until now, there is only 7 females under 18 who have rated this movie ........ so it wasn't because of them

but the movie is good 8/10

The Killer totally deserves a Top 250 position.

Definitely think this needs to be in the top 250. I have no idea why crap like Hot Fuzz and the simpsons movie are.

The Killer used to be in the Top 250 a few years ago, when I first started looking at this site. In fact, I think it peaked at number sixty-something. I remember it distinctly. That was when the list was filled with classics, and nothing else.

Furthermore, Hard-Boiled was also in the Top 250. I remember it. It was BARELY in there, like at 238, but it was in there. Maybe those old Hong Kong action flicks were experiencing a surge in popularity due to word-of-mouth DVD sales. Who knows.

Because it doesn't have enough fat gay hobits, and it wasn't nominated for an oscar.

Although I believe this movie needs to be in the top 100, I just don't think it matters if it does on IMDB.

This website rating system is total-absolute BS. I trusted it and ended-up watching some HORRIBLE movies.

Then I trusted it again and ended-up NOT watching some of the best movies ever just because some fanboys had voted it down to hell...

osmanzeki - try rottentomatoes.com for a more credible critique on films.

reply

your joking about the rottentomatoes.com stuff right? , cause from what i have seen i think 'overall' (NOTE: Overall) IMDB is more credible than that site is.

reply

Face/off should be on there too, that has bs rating at a 7.1. Faceoff is my favorite action flick and its not even close to being on it

Click on the rating and check out the arithmetic mean for this and Hardboiled. The Killer is getting an 8.2 while Hardboiled is getting an 8.3. Imdb uses some arcane system of measuring for giving the movies a front page "rating" and a ranking in the top 250. As far as I can tell total number of votes and the age of the movie come into play, but this may not always be the case. I've noticed some movies on the imdb with ratings higher than their arithmetic means, so I don't know what's up.

In any case, getting this on the imdb top 250 would only serve to lower its score; a lot of my favorite obscure movies used to be on the top 250 then get voted off by fanboys flooding the score with 1's. This happened to a lot of my favorite Japanese movies from the 50's and 60's, where as many as 15% of voters would have given the movies a 1. The list is a joke, so don't take it seriously.

i do think im going to have to overall agree with chamelion as you got alot of fanboy's that dont use there brains when voting and either go a 10/10 for a film they like or a 1/10 for something they dont like... or will vote a 10 on a movie they like just to boost it's rating and a 1/10 for a movie that's higher than the movie they liked just to lower it's rating.

it's people like that, that skew the IMDB results as people just need to give there 'honest' opinion of a film regardless if it raises or lowers a film's average rating.

cause i ALWAYS give what i honestly feel a film should get.

but yeah, lately it does seem like some films (i.e. 'most' super hero/comic book type movies lol) on imdb are getting rated much higher than they normally would if it where not for the fanboy's acting up.

it would be nice if you could sorta just stop people under 18 voting on imdb to help minimize those "1's and 10's voting fanboy crowd's"

but i guess at the end of the day it probably dont matter to much as to what places where as i dont take the Top250 to seriously as almost NO ONE would agree on the order the films should be... i more or less use it as something to look at in terms of if a film that i might have not seen is worth checking out... say on some classics... cause there's some films in the top250 i most likely never would have seen had it not for them being in the top250... and im glad i seen the majority of the the ones that are rated high although i have seen some where thre rated really good and i was disappointed with the film and could not see how it was rated so high etc etc.

just some thoughts ;)
