was this based on another film with the same name ?

I've read on here that there was another film called the delinquents that was made in 1957 and it has a similar story. I wonder if this was based on that film in a way ?

I was always under the impression it was [loosely] based on Robert Altmans (50's) film?

No, it was based on Australian author Criena Rohan’s 1962 novel.
