I havent seen this movie in a long time but what I do remember is there were too many killings as a result of other happenings other than the creature. I can recall one man getting shot with an arrow in the back, another man got crushed by a door and I think miguel blew up trying to go to the surface. The creature got treated to much human stupidity in this one ...
" but trick us again child and your suffering will be legendary, even in hell"
The thing about the decompression is that there would be no decompression until he opened the hatch at the surface. So long as the pod was sealed, the pressure inside would be constant regardless of depth.
I've seen this movie a lot (a fave from my teen years of VHS sci-fi/horror renting) and now own it on DVD, but one of the things that I find interesting about it, and that differs from other Alien style setups like it is exactly that... in fact, MOST of the deaths are caused only indirectly by the presence of the creature!
(big spoilers below!)
Osborne & Hodges - killed in minisub (arguably by creature). Burciaga - dies from injuries sustained during shockwave caused by Snyder. Laidlaw - killed by faulty door trying to rescue Burciaga and Collins. Richardson - bitten in half by creature. Scarpelli - "taken" by creature. Van Gelder - accidentally stabbed with shark dart by Snyder. Snyder - dies trying to flee to surface without decompressing. Norris - commits suicide with shock paddles trying to kill creature.
So that's two out of eight directly killed by the creature (five being generous and counting Norris, Osborne and Hodges). In fact, Snyder indirectly and directly counts for four (including himself), making Miguel Ferrer just as deadly as a sea monster!
It's actually a nice touch, though, IMO, especially given that the creature isn't THAT menacing in this, and that the environment they're in is - in reality - far more deadly than any sea creature of that size could be.
thanks 4 the break down im glad someone else noticed the crazy way the cast members met their demises ...... this happens every now and then but not with type of regularity in one movie trick us again child and your suffering will be legendary, even in hell http://www.houseofbs.com/
Just got done watching it, Burciaga was long dead by the time Snyder set the nukes off - his injuries were caused by the creature taking out the stabilizers on the satellite station that he and Collins were on. Might as well give the creature credit for one more.
Really? Wow, guess I remembered it wrong (and it's not like I haven't seen it a few times). Man, now I've got to go back and watch it again tomorrow. :D
I just realized we've been looking at this movie all wrong. The creature in this movie is an incidental natural hazard, like falling rocks or lightning. If you go by body count, the real "Monster" in this movie is Snyder - with the exception of the first two killed in the minisub, pretty much everyone who dies in this movie does so as a direct result of Snyder's actions.
They go up against the creature with compressed air pellets/darts/injectors (think: shark gun from James Bond's Live and Let Die) on the tips of poles, like one-shot spears. Pretty much a homage to the shock rods they first try in Alien.
These "shark dart" spears do nothing to the creature (which is a bit odd, really) but during the confusion, Van Gelder carelessly backs into the spear held by Snyder, and the compressed air dart causes his chest/heart to explode!
One less human for the creature to have to kill. :)
