Decompression...

The movie isn't a bad watch really, as long as you suspend disbelief a little. One thing they make a lot of near the end though, is decompressing. This isn't really accurate. They are already in a correctly pressurized habitat. They would only need to decompress if their bodies had been physically exposed to sea pressure. All of their submersibles have the same feature. So waiting to decompress would not have been necessary at all.

Doesnt make for a fun movie.

I did find it amusing to watch someone assplode all over the place.

The escape pod wasn't even attached to a decompression chamber, so even by the movie's internal logic, the whole thing doesn't make sense.

Although there are numerous other technical issues concerning compression in this movie, supposedly the habitat is compressed to the depth that they are at. The reason I say this is the fact that they have a moon pool by which they lifted the diver back into the habitat. Otherwise, opening the moon pool hatch would have instantly flooded the habitat. Of course, being already compressed at that depth, the diver would not have needed a one-atmosphere suit since he could have just swam around with a helmet instead.

The atmosphere would naturally have to be at a much higher pressure at that depth in order to prevent implosion. However, the violent decompression at the end would not have happened until he opened the hatch at the surface - for the entire ascent, the pressure would have remained the same inside the pod. Indeed, decompressing BEFORE the ascent would have been suicide, as the pod would then have imploded on launch.

That's not really how that works. What keeps vessels from imploding under the pressure is the strength of the hull in those cases. For instance the Pisces V and VI submersibles have an operational depth of something like 8k feet at 1 atmosphere of cabin pressure. You can literally walk out of the ship once surfaced. Same with the Navy submarine fleet.

However yeah in the movie they have to be in AP pressurized exotic gas environment due to the Moon pool.
