Was the script for this movie based off an actual case that Jerry Beck worked or was familiar with?

The same as why white-supremacy groups actually exist. Not to act supremely white. They exist to provide a colorful topical element for our entertainment. Which is why crime's actual cases exist in general. And why Johnson was in this film. Not to mention Penelope Ann Miller.
