It's particularly amazing when you note this movie came out in 1989, well before Jack Lemmon made the two grumpy old men movies in the mid 90s, Out to Sea and My Fellow Americans. In these movies, he played an older man but with a lot more vitality.

I know make-up can be helpful, but most of that is on the face. In his later movies, hair dye and cosmetic surgery or temporary fixes like Botox can make someone's face look a little more taut. However, the thing that caught my attention most was Lemmon's weight in Dad as compared to the later movies I mentioned.

Lemmon looked scrawny and withered in Dad (e.g., when Ted Danson carries him out of the hospital) and his arms and hands looked wrinkled and bony. There is nothing on this in the trivia, but I suspect that he lost weight for this part. If so, I don't know if that's very healthy for a man his age.

According to IMDB, Lemmon's death in 2001 was due to bladder cancer. I wonder if the rigors of his movies had anything to do with this? (IMDB also mentioned that he had a drinking problem at one time.)

I actually appreciate his roles now that he's gone than when he was alive. He was excellent and believable in Dad.

Jack Lemmon was a smoker, smoking significantly increases your risk of bladder cancer--not sure when he quit but he lamented once about his own smoking
