"Dad" is showing on HBO Signature at 12:45 am EST on 5/17/07, on HBO at 6:30 am EST on 5/18/07, and on HBO West at 9:30 am EST on 5/18/07. It's a good movie, you should check it out.

I think Mom reacted the way she did because for so long she had been Dad's sole caregiver and when he became not so dependant on his wife of so many years, she felt as though she was not needed as much as she had been. It was a "comfort" to her to know that Dad would always rely upon her and now instead of him relying on her, he was "getting better" and he did this because now that she had the heart attack, she was aware that she now needed to depend on someone else other than being the "strong" one.

Dad also said it best when he and John were at lunch after Johns business meeting that Dad attended and they were talking about workers and bosses and John asked which one Mom was and Dad said, You know the answer to that " THE boss" and then they both laughed.

This movie is so heart touching. I am watching this for the first time and I think it is great! Jack Lemmon deserved a Oscar or Golden GLobe for his portrayal for this one.

Although this is useless for you now...

She was pissed off at the "new" Dad, for he was now "free" from the need to please her, and was finally ready to go after the life that he, as Denson's character said, never new he had the right to want. The only thing that could irritate such a controlling person more than not having the control anymore is to be in the opposite role. That's what happened when she had to play along with the "new" Dad's quirks. Dad was someone who she always thought she had to take care of by which she justifed her controlling issues as necessary and she probably hated him for (in her mind) making her act like this, because he was so helpless. Now, she was indirectly under his control. Fear of losing her selfimposed role as a caregiver in life might be the reason why she couldn't give up her need for controlling.

These kind of films rarely work, but this one was put together with such thought (especially the psychological elements) and with as much realism as they could afford for a dramedy, that it completely grows on you moments after you see Jack.

He gave such a compelling tour de force performance and completely deserved every award imaginable. Also, he was a lot younger than the character, yet he really becomes the old man. It's a crime he never got anything for this.

It's a really heartbreaking movie for anyone (more or less like Denson character) that ever had a similar situation happened to him in life.

This movie is made even more sad by the fact that Jack Lemmon died 12 years after making this film of the same kind of cancer he acted like he had in this film

This movie is thoughtful, with several charming moments, but the two adult children drive me crazy with the way they disrespect their parents' relationship, solely because of their advanced years. Keeping them separated when one is hospitalized because "that's best"--outrageous and insulting.

One time I accompanied an older friend to sign the papers on a $100,000 condo she was buying in a retirement community. The 25-year old agency rep spoke to her like she was toilet training a toddler.

I'm in my 50's and I've already had the experience of being patronized by a couple of people who automatically assumed they were smarter because they were younger. Not looking forward to seeing a lot more of that attitude.

This aging business, it blows.
