Canada's Paul Bernardo:

>>>Bernardo was a fan of stories about serial killers, including Bret Easton Ellis's American Psycho. His assumed surname, "Teale", was apparently an homage to the fictional serial killer Martin Thiel played by Kevin Bacon in the movie Criminal Law.

OMG, I never knew that! Thanks Moll. It's pretty sad. Hey, at least he got to experiance the greatness of our Gary Oldman!

paul bernardo and his wife karla (nee Homolka) first killed her sister in 1990, and then a few other schoolgirls in Ontario in a couples rape/murder scenario. When they were incarcerated (seperate) they both changed their last names to Teale. He's serving Life, she was released after 12 years for flipping on him. She had made the deal before prosecutors found enough evidence (mainly hidden videotapes) that made her out to be more than an 'unwitting', 'abusive' spouse.
She's living somewhere now in quebec, he's still locked up. Perversely, they both changed their last names to Thiel in homage to kev's character in this movie.

I don't get it, what's your source on this name change? The Wiki article is huge and makes no mention of that name or any change of name. He was a heinous killer before the movie came out, and continued after that. Where's the influence?

reply

If I recall correctly, there were people in Canada campaigning against American Psycho being filmed there because American Psycho was found in the home of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. Which is kind of stupid, because that novel wasn't released until AFTER Bernardo began murdering people.

The big deal about American Psycho was made because the book was found under their bed.. On Karlas side not to mention Paul and Patrick seemed to have very much in common. Nobody said American Psycho was why they did the things they did but if you have ever read anything on them particularly the book Invisible Darkness you will learn all kinds of interesting trivia.

But you are right they started killing December 23, 1990 with her baby sister.. The book was published a few months later..

I believe in the book Invisible Darkness there was the receipt for it found in the book and Karla had purchased it in April. Which would be a month before they abducted their second victim Leslie Mahaffy.

Once Upon A Time, An angel and a devil fell in love.. It did not end well.

It's mentioned extensively in the book Invisible Darkness.

He's taking the knife out of the Cheese!
Do you think he wants some cheese?

Yes I am reading that book right now and just finished the first section where it mentions that movie. Although Paul Bernardo began his career as the scarsborough rapist years before this movie came out, his other crimes (mainly the killings of his wifes younger sister, and two schoolgirls occured in the early ninties after the movie was released.

So yeah I mean he didn't start all of his violent behavior because of this movie but his later crimes were sure influenced by it.

The flock with richard gere had a husband/wife duo committing rape/murders as a plot. Sounds like the film was inspired by that real life couple...?
