One of the funniest scenes ever!

When Woody Allen is showing Allan Alda the movie he made about him, which instead of singing his praises compares him to Mussolini, among other things. It's absolutely brilliant, the minute or so the scene takes is about as good a movie can get without Eliza Dushku in it. If you haven't seen this movie, rent it or buy it, but whatever you do watch this scene. You will be thanking me in your laughs.

One of my favourite lines from the film is when Woody Allen says that the first time he was inside a woman was when he visited the statue of Liberty!

reply

Spot on, the mussolini bit was definitely one of the most genuine LOL moments in any WA movie ever...

He said the last time he was inside a woman was when he visited the Statue of Liberty. He was discussing his lack of a sex life, having not been intimate with his wife for a year.

I guess it's like looking at clouds. You see one thing and I see another. Peace.

I laugh without control at Woody's reaction of disgust to his sisters relevation that her 'date' had defecated on her. Perhaps I shouldn't but his face is a picture.

reply

I love the bit where he's telling his wife about it later. Something like:

"A strange man defecated on my sister."
"Why?"
"I don't know. Is there any answer I can give that would justify it?"

reply

Perhaps I shouldn't but his face is a picture.
I haven't seen this movie in years, but I just burst out laughing picturing his reaction.

In that documentary, i like how the Ass goes "If it bends, it's funny. If it breaks, it isn't."

reply

I also get a kick out of Allen's mock response to Alda's character, Lester, trying to explain the irony of his work being taught in the school. Funny as hell.

reply

I agree with one of the previous posters. I couldnt stop laughing when the sister was describing what the date did to her and Woody Allen's reaction to it. I am still not sure whether Allen meant that to be a funny scene or not but I dont care, it was hillarious to me.

Syncing Alda's catchphrase with Francis the Talking Mule has always been my favorite part of that scene.

Man, give her the *beep* overhead clause!

I had to rewind that about five times. Hysterical.

It is a horse, not an ass. Also, there is actually an error there. Alda never says, "If it breaks, it isn't." He says, "It it breaks, it is not funny." Yeah, you could say that Cliff used sound editing for that, although why bother.

reply

Wrong--it WAS an ass, Francis the Talking Mule, to be exact.

reply

Oh man! I was just going to start a thread saying the exact same thing. The screening with Mussolini and the donkey... it's the hardest I've laughed in any of the Woody Allen movies I've seen so far, and I must have seen over 20 of them. Mussolini, the applause, the ass going " if it bends it's funny, if it breaks it's not." Simply hilarious! I just love Woody Allen. Bravo!

reply

...Or the look on Woody's face when Alda speaks into his tape recorder: "a poor loser does the story of a great man's life..."

My favorite is probably the expression on Woody's face at the wedding ceremony, with the hat and everything.....hilarious

reply

Yes, that was good, especially when the bends-breaks quote is used and we see a horse supposedly talking and Alda is a voice over. But the part I could relate to is when he is ranting about having to do everything himself. Boy, has that happened to me so often!

reply

I always get a kick out of how Woody's wife (Joanna Gleason) barely reacts when he tells her about what happened to his sister.

reply

Junk Rice, that bit is just genius, so MUCH explained in that 4 second scene...

I also fully agree that both the defecatign story, and the film within film are 2 of Woody's funniest ever scenes.

Coz lifes too short to listen to Madlib

Maybe she wishes that Cliff would do that to her some night.

reply

Great scene, although my vote probably goes to the scene with him and Caroline Aaron when she descibes her "date.":)
